John DeLorean and the DeLorean motor Company

With my love for exotic automobiles and unique body styles, one of my favorites and the most innovated car designers is John DeLorean. When you say the word DeLorean everybody thinks of the infamous movie back to the future where Doc Brown takes a DMC – 12 DeLorean and turns it into a time machine. This infamous car and the car’s creator have a very interesting history from high-level job positions in the automotive industry with the failing DeLorean Motor Company and the DeLorean Motor Company’s rebirth in the middle to late 2000’s. From 1969 to 1972 John DeLorean was also known for being a very charismatic high-level executive that made it all the way to the position of vice president of General Motors. Several of his innovations and designs for vehicle manufacturing are still used to this day.
In 1973 John DeLorean feeling that he was not living up to his potential left General Motors to start his own car company to be the next star in automotive sports car design. John DeLorean was going to have to start from scratch with no vehicle and a couple designs he had in mind, he was going to create what was to be an ethical sports car.
John DeLorean’s new company the DeLorean Motor Company was meant to create a safe and affordable sports car that was new and different for its time. The going price for the DeLorean (the DMC – 12) that he wanted to build would go for $12,000 per vehicle.
His problem was finding money and investors for his new endeavor that will cost him around $87 million to get this vehicle and manufacturing factory off the ground. DMC’s initial public offering in 1977 was 2 million shares starting at a price of $5 per share, which would not be enough to kick-start his
