Johannes Vermeer painted The Art of Painting in the Netherlands. It is an oil on wood painting made in 1673. The painting shows a figure in black sitting down on a four legged object. This figure in black is holding a long object in its right hand. Next to the figure in black is an unfinished painting of an elegant figure in blue. The figure in blue is posing and holding objects in both hands. Inside the room there is a chandelier on top and it is not emitting any light. The floors have black and white tiles like a checkers board. The table in front of the figure in blue has several fabrics on top.
Vermeer’s artwork emphasizes some certain elements and principles of art. He uses value on the blue figure to show more emphasis of it. He also uses the element of line on the on the black and white tiles. It shows balance on how the black and white tiles are in symmetry. He asked his wife if he she could assist him with his latest piece and she agreed to help. They both agreed to work in his workshop underneath their house. The painter worked several days and nights to come up with a spectacular image for his painting. His undecidedness caused a messy situation to occur on top of his table from having to choose the perfect dress for his wife to wear. The painter must have thought of the objects for her to hold too for the painting. There was another object had had thought of her to hold but then he changed his mind knowing it would be too heavy for her to hold for several hours. That is why he put it back on the table and chose moderate objects for her to handle. She did not mind holding the pose for several hours because she was comfortable sitting and doing nothing than doing household chores.
