“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” Matthew 5:44. These are the words of Jesus, and as a Christian, I take them as both a command and a mission from my Lord and savior Jesus Christ. However, My Lord and Savior also says in John 18:36, “Jesus said, ‘My Kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.’” This states that if the Kingdom that we are all striving to become a part of was of this world, then we would fight. We would fight! This just said that Jesus would expect us to fight for Him and with Him to preserve His Kingdom. It might be said that because the Kingdom is not of this world, then we therefore …show more content…
The first is that war is just, and that killing is justifiable. The second position is exactly the opposite of the first, war is not alright, but mainly that killing is unjustifiable. The first position is most definitely correct for two main reasons. One, how could killing be unjustifiable if God himself killed people? Second, how could killing be unjustifiable if Jesus and God are both depicted as warriors? The Pacifists believe that these passages must be metaphorical, but they are mistaken. God is a warrior, he did kill people, and it was and still is …show more content…
Is God just? ‘God is just because of his very definition,’ Thomas Aquinas. We know that God is just, and therefore, wars are just because God himself participated in war and is called a warrior. “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17 NIV” God is a warrior, but you might say that that is the Old Covenant, and therefore it does not apply to the New Covenant. However, Jesus told us that he did not come to abolish the old law, but to fulfill it. We also can know this because the God of the Old Testament is not any different than the God of the New Testament, that would be heresy. Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” If none of the Old Law is to be abolished, then that includes the Old Covenant. It is therefore assumed that God is still as much a warrior now as he was in the time of the Israelites.
2) The cause must be just. This is jus ad bellum because you decide if
In the world’s lens during the 1760s, the British empire had a clear and prominent control over the colonies. However, by the mid-1770s the Americans became enraged enough to declare war against the British for independence. Due to Britain’s massive imperial presence around the globe, the British civilians had a strong inclination for a successful outcome. Instead, the colonists pulled a surprising victory from what should have been a swift defeat. While the British had an abundance of advantages, they lost the Revolutionary War because the British army underestimated the colonists’ perseverance for freedom.
As history shows, every war comes some sort of public opposition. There will always be pro-war and anti-war men and women across the country. In World War I, there was a major rift between the two sides. Not until civilians were being killed did President Wilson give in and join the war. Similarly, not everyone wanted to get into World War II until the Pearl Harbor bombings. The Vietnam War went differently than the previous two wars. This time, there was a huge majority public opposition to President Johnson and President Nixon’s decisions. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, the Tet Offensive, and the Kent State Shootings all undermined American public support for the Vietnam War and impacted government decisions, ultimately bringing the Vietnam
Before in the introduction, the essay introduced limited war and total war, and there is a difference between the two wars. Limited war is war with restriction such as weapon usage (not using nuclear weapons) and territories involved. A limited war follows the ‘Just War Theory’, while total war is solely meant on pure obliteration of opposing side.
War powers refers to the powers exercised by Congress or the president during times of war or other crises affecting national security. Article 2, Section 2 of the US Constitution declares that the president is the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States. He may direct the military after an official declaration of war from Congress. There is a lot of disagreement and confusion about what exactly the president has the power to do under the Constitution. The purpose of this paper is to determine what war powers the constitution and Congress give the president, domestically and abroad during times of war, and what the scope of those powers is.
“When war is thrust upon the nation, the President had not only the authority but the responsibility to ‘resist force by force.’” –U.S. Supreme Court ruling of the Prize Cases, 1862 (67 U.S. 6335).
War has been a consistent piece of mankind 's history. It has significantly influenced the lives of individuals around the globe. The impacts are amazingly adverse. In the novel, “The Wars,” by Timothy Findley, Soldiers must shoulder compelling weight on the warzone. Such weight is both family and the country weight. Many individuals look at soldiers for hop and therefore, adding load to them. Those that cannot rationally beat these difficulties may create Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Tragically, some resort to suicide to get away from their insecurities. Troops, notwithstanding, are not by any means the only ones influenced by wars; relatives likewise encounter mental hardships when their friends and family are sent to war. Timothy Findley
“Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime.” As depicted in the quote by Ernest Hemingway war is a difficult situation in which the traditional boundaries of moral ethics are tested. History is filled with unjust wars and for centuries war was not though in terms of morality. Saint Augustine, however, offered a theory detailing when war is morally permissible. The theory offers moral justifications for war as expressed in jus ad bellum (conditions for going to war) and in jus in bello (conditions within warfare). The theory places restrictions on the causes of war as well as the actions permitted throughout. Within early Christianity, the theory was used to validate crusades as morally permissible avoiding conflict with religious views. Based on the qualifications of the Just War Theory few wars have been deemed as morally acceptable, but none have notably met all the requirements. Throughout the paper I will apply Just War Theory in terms of World War II as well as other wars that depict the ideals presented by Saint Augustine.
War changes people. Usually when one thinks of war, blood, battle and death are the first things that come to mind, but psychological trauma is over shadowed by these popular thoughts. Though war, on the surface, is focused on such gory aspects, The Wars by Timothy Findley shows us an angle where the chaos of war significantly affects a soldier’s mind mentally. War definitively effects the life of all soldiers, so much so that they may show signs of insanity after, or even during battle. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychological disorder triggered when a victim experiences a significantly traumatic event in their life, and has difficulty returning to life as it was (“Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder”). Insanity as defined by Psychology
God is the same yesterday, is the same today and forever will be. His command for the need of capital punishment for those who murder their neighbor has not changed. What Sister Helen does not realize is that God is not gray. He gives black and white commandments and they are to be followed and not be molded into something we would rather choose to do or believe in. Murder is not taking a life in a situation of defending yourself, or a soldier in the military defending the rights God has given to us. Killing, given these examples, are praised in the Bible. We Christians, in obedience to our God, must bear and support the death penalty.
23. 7. The meek and humble Jesus, the great pattern of humanity, and every other virtue that can adorn and dignify men, hath commanded to love our enemies, to do good to them that hate and despitefully use us. I feel the obligations, I wish to impress them on the minds of our colored brethren, and that we may all forgive you, as we wish to be forgiven, we think it a great mercy to have all anger and bitterness removed from our minds; I appeal to your own feelings, if it is not very disquieting to feel yourselves under dominion of wrathful disposition.”
There are many different pros and cons for the United States entering World War 1. Some can be argued but there is a couple that we know about for sure and were good and bad reasons for entering the war.
The just war theory can be broken down into three components: jus ad bellum, jus en bello, and jus post bellum. Translated from Latin, these mean “justice before war, justice in war, and justice after war.” In this way, the Catholic Church is able to reconcile Jesus’s lofty teachings about loving your neighbor and causing no harm with protecting the innocent (Massaro 104).
“If a body of enemy troops is repulsed, give to the wounded the same care as you would give your own men; treat them all the forbearance due to the one who is stricken…After the battle, restrain the fury of your troops; spare the vanquished…People should say of you: they fought courageously when they had to, but remained generous and humane throughout.” –General Guillaume Henri Dufour (Moorehead, 1998)
The meaning to justice is behaving and acting to what is consequently good or fair. The act of justice is based upon equality being that people should get what they deserve. The Bible says in Deuteronomy 32:4 “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.” We see here in this verse that God is merciful and in all He does he is just in his discipline. As sinners we fall short of Gods glory and because of this when we commit our wrong doings such as adultery, lying, coveting, thieving, murdering, and worshiping false idols, etc is when we are judged for our sins and according to what God finds just is how we will be persecuted. Justice is an attribute that is showed to us everyday because of His sanctity. Man cannot understand justice if they don’t understand sin, we can try and hide from God or prolong our recognition to our actions because we know Go...
