Throughout the world, different cultures have different meanings on what family means to them. Some consider those who live together in a household to be family while others view family as those who come from the same descendent. Contrary to popular belief, there is not a standard type of family in the United States. The nuclear family is often considered the most common, however, even in the most common family structure different forms of family values derive. To fully understand what family means to different people and the social aspects that come along with it, I interviewed my friend Jessie. Jessie comes from a nuclear family of a mother, father, brother, and two sisters (though one is estranged). Though on first glance Jessie’s household …show more content…
Two main types of residences are patrilocal and matrilocal residences. The patrilocal residence is where the newlywed couple lives near the groom's side of the family while the matrilocal residence is when the couple lives near the brides side of the family. When studying Jessie’s family residence patterns, it was difficult to pinpoint what type of residence was most common among her family members. On both sides of Jessie’s family, all of her family members are from some part of Georgia. However, Jessie’s mom has two sisters and they both live with their husbands in Rome, Ga, meaning that her mom’s side of the family has more of a matrilocal residence. Meanwhile, Jessie’s father has four brothers and they all live with their wives and children in or near Rome, Ga. One reason why both sides of the family choose to live in Rome, Ga with their spouses is because of the large number of family members around the area. Though everyone in Jessie’s family is from Georgia, Floyd County offers a bigger sense of community. When I asked Jessie where she plans on living once she marries and starts her own family of procreation, she stated that she would continue to live in Floyd County and she would not move anywhere else for her future spouse. One reason for her decision to stay is because she feels a sense of community with her family in Floyd County. Another reason to stay is because of her obligation to take care of her older brother. Jessie's older brother, Benji, was born with Hydrocephalus, a condition in which fluid is in the brain. Benji also has cerebral palsy, leaving him wheelchair bound. Benjie is unable to take care of himself, leaving Jessie the obligation to take care of him once her parents are unable to do so. Though Jessie could one day possibly live with her brother and future family somewhere else, Floyd County offers Jessie a better sense of community
Purvis wanted Jessie to toughen up so he would survive living on the Moonlight, which he achieved by treating Jessie as an adult, not like an infant. Purvis taught Jessie not to whine and which warned him not to show his concern towards the slaves. By being firm with Jessie, Purvis proves that he has Jessie’s best interests at heart and is looking out for him. Jessie realised Purvis's attitude towards him was Purvis’s way to show how much he cared about Jessie. Telling Jessie not to show concern towards the slaves and not to whine about his situation is evidence that Purvis and Jessie’s friendship was not sweet but instead helped by developing a friendship built on
Ida chose to return to Mississippi for the birth of her daughter “for the express purpose of having the baby in the familiar hands of a midwife”. While she was there, George relocated to Chicago seeking steady employment where he obtained a series of small jobs and was finally able to rent a one room basement apartment for his returning family. George gradually improved jobs and obtained steady employment with the Campbell Soup Company, which ended up being his lifetime occupation. Throughout this period of time, George sought improved housing and a better environment for his growing family. However, they were still obligated to live within the allotted areas for Black families which were extremely overpopulated. Ida Mae was not too proud to accept advice from migrants who were there before her and The Defender's periodic lists of “do's and don’ts” . She was above all not a complainer or a slacker, but would work alongside of her husband determined to help achieve the objectives they courageously set out to accomplish, more opportunities, freedom to practice all aspects of life granted in the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, and protection from the Jim Crow laws for all of their
After all, T.J.’s family doesn’t own their own land, they have to sharecrop on Harlan Granger's land, and T.J. has to live with even more brothers and sisters than him and also in a smaller house. That is why I think that Stacey even hangs around
The first person that adds onto Taylor’s new family in Arizona is Lou Ann. In the beginning of the book Taylor is looking in the newspaper when she comes across two ads for places to stay. “ Within ten minutes Lou Ann and I were
Jessie’s perspective of the modern world is more related to a fantasy because she has never been in an atmosphere like the modern world. Coming from the 1840s, she is unfamiliar with inventions, such as cars and phones, and she struggles to operate these machines throughout her journey. Jessie’s confusion about ordinary objects creates a humorous tone throughout the novel, thus, making the novel enjoyable to read. An example would be when Jessie escaped from the Clifton Preserve by hiding in the back of a bread truck. On the side of the truck, she saw the word “FlavorBest”. “FlavorBest? Jessie thought. Was that even a word?” (82). Jessie was confused because she did not understand that “FlavorBest” was the name of a brand (something found in the modern world) , and that it is not an actual word. Another example would be when Jessie reached the gas station and she went inside to buy a drink. She was surprised to see how much the cost of the drink. “It cost more than Perspective is an important factor in this novel, and it is also used to help the audience to connect with Jessie and to understand her development throughout the
You can tell that she wants everything the go smoothly so she goes overboard to make sure she looked pretty. Gerald come out of the bathroom and its like night and day with his personality. Even though she could see the blood on the floor. Her brain could not process the fact that the man she had been married to for so many years just died right in front of her eyes. She keeps calling his name as if he would wake up.
The TV series, Jessie is set in the Upper West Side of New York City. Jessie is a nanny for a wealthy family of four culturally diverse, adopted siblings. In the episode titled “Are You Cooler Than a 5th Grader,” Ravi, an Indian adoptee, enters the American school system
One of the last things that were different about the movie was the ending. It didn’t end with Jessie not being able to tell the difference between the humans and the pigs. After that, Jessie took Benjamin and a few other animals with her to escape. They came back a few years later after Napoleon died. The farm’s new owners were coming and Jessie and
When she left her two kids (one of whom is my mother) with their grandparents for a night while she went to see a movie with her husband, the two came back to a house that was a gargantuan flaming night-light. Everything got ravaged except for her cedar chest and her husband's tool box. Obviously, they had to move somewhere else, so they moved into an apartment in her parents' house. With a lack of insurance to cover such a loss – she needed a great deal of courage, which she fortunately had. With help from her relatives, Jessie sold the family barn and worked at the factory that was right beside her former house. When she acquired enough money to purchase a mobile home and rise from a low

Each of Jessie’s girlfriends all have feelings of wanting to get close to him and he feels the same way about them too. Jessie does this because he is using dating as a kind of distraction for himself when it comes to dealing with the loss of his sister Pamela. This is what is referred to as a type of cross-sex friendship known
Compassion is something you see a lot in Jessie, she is very good at relating with people around her. She never makes it seem that she is higher than someone else because they are in a lower spot than she is. Having compassion for those around her makes her a very nice person to be around, no matter what you are going through. In the bible Jesus talks about showing compassion in Mathew 9:36, "When He saw the crowds,
The definition of family and the composition of it have changed over the last century and both continue to evolve. The size and structure of a family impacted by two-income earners, same sex couples, and the acceptance of non-traditional households have all changed the family structure in our country. This influence also creates a cause and effect on our communities. The form of the typical family is much different today than it has been in the past.
"A family is a small social group of people related by ancestry or affection, who share common values and goals, who may live together in the same dwelling, and who may participate in the bearing and raising of children. They have a physical or emotional connection with each other that is ongoing" (Vissing, 2011) and is the foundation of all societies. They can be formed by a grouping of father-mother-children or even more complicated combination of relatives. In the primary stage of family life in the United States, everyone from every generation lived together in one house. Subsequently, the idea of traditional family evolved and a married couple with children is at present, often called the traditional family. There are many types of families; however, this paper will focus on the traditional family. It will describe how the functionalist perspective, conflict perspective, and the interactionism theory apply to the sociological institution known as a family. It will explain some of the similarities and differences between the sociological theories in regards to families and how they affect the family members.
In the end, life for Jessie had ceased to be. Her life is gone; the turmoil finally removed…a sense of relief perhaps, maybe a permanent state of rest. By committing suicide she sealed her optimum destiny and achieved closure to her life. She reached nirvana.
To thoroughly elaborate on the institution of family we most look at the family as it was before and how much it has changed over time. Throughout the years we are recognizing that the family is slowly being replaced by other agents of socialization. Families in the past consisted of a mother and a father and most times children. We are, as many societies a patriarchal society; men are usually the head of the households. This has always been considered the norm.
