Owens throughout his life grew up in poverty. He was the son of a sharecropper and the grandson of a slave. Owens suffered from Chronic Bronchial congestion and pneumonia. Owens was required to pick a 100 pounds of cotton a day at the age of only seven to help the family put food on the table.
