The Scottish cartoonist responsible for presenting adults with a revolutionary science fiction comic book in the form of Jeff Hawke is Sydney Jordan. It was through this art form that he was able to inject fantasy into the mundane lives that most adults are accustomed to. Born and bred in Dundee, Scotland, Sydney Jordan grew up in a city where the publishing house D.C. Thomson released a plethora of comic books every week. Jordan’s memories of his childhood are consumed by the comic books he read in those days and the joyful and spirited conversations he had with his father about them. Popular in Italy and Scandinavia, the character originally proposed by Jordan was the typical superhero that many children aspire to be. This was soon changed into a character with a relatable personality who lives in a potential and desirable futuristic scenario. Like many other comic books, the characters and their storylines in the Jeff Hawke series also underwent changes as the series progressed and become more complex. The earlier volumes were traditional in terms of representing scenes containing action and violence between two species, humans and aliens. When Patterson joined the team, Jeff Hawke’s character was given more depth as he started to act as a diplomat and intermediary to facilitate negotiations and trade deals between the two sides. It became a story based on morals, diplomatic relations, and a sense of camaraderie as opposed to a conventional good-vs-evil plot. The aliens in the comic are even portrayed as heroic at times. The Jeff Hawke cartoon also changed the way comics were read by placing more importance on the dialogue than the imagery. These fresh perspectives and ideas turned the comic into a sophisticated and enjoyable read for adults as well. The dialogue and interactions between humans and aliens are unique and when combined with the highly detailed and expressive imagery by Jordan, would create a unforgettable reading experience.
