Jane Eyre is a classic novel in the history of literature. It has been adapted into several different languages, made abridged, and has been portrayed in multiple movie adaptations. These movie versions of the novel have ranged from silent films to modern-day cinema, all working to bring to life this classic tale of love and tragedy. Though movie adaptations cannot always present a book’s plot in its entirety, there is much to be said on the lack of fidelity in which Jane Eyre has been displayed on the screen. This essay will compare and contrast the original text and the 2011 adaptation of the novel to discern if the film was able to capture the likeness of the book. This specific movie adaptation of Jane Eyre was severely lacking in terms of fidelity and was, overall, a poor representation of the original story, as it not only cut out scenes that had been vital to character development, it also made alterations to the plot and the characters that made the entire purpose of the story meaningless. The director decided to present the story using analepsis in order to add drama by making the movie jump from the past to the present. This aided well in the flow of the story, as it began with her in the Moor house and then flashed back to her childhood and on to the rest of the story— eventually leading to where the story began. When it came to presenting Jane’s childhood, the director was able to accurately display the misery that was her upbringing. An example being the abuse she received from her cousin John Reed.
