Leadership has proven to be an important factor contributing to the success or failure of any organization. Although there are several different leadership styles, some will prove to be instrumental in the success or failure in a corrections environment. Different leadership practices displayed by the jail administration can affect the jail environment and operations in a negative or positive aspect, and can equate to the difference between a safe, secure environment for the inmates, staff, and visitors. Looking at different leadership styles we can access the probability of the jail environment having a successful impact on the community, or becoming an environment filled with disruption, violence, vandalism, and lack of sanitation.

We know this leader fails at direct supervision of employees and does not provide direct regular feedback to those under his command. If this leader is in command of strong, highly experienced employees who are self- motivated, then there is little to no work for the leader. This leadership style produces no supervision or guidance, and leads to poor prod uction, poor time management and lack of control. In the jail environment this leadership style could prove to be deadly, or very costly to the staff, inmates and visitors. Several practices and procedures govern the success of the jail security and safety. In the absence of good leadership practices, policies are broken and overlooked, communication is isolated, and bad behavior often goes unpu nished. From the safety aspect, this type of activity can quickly become dangerous. The primary responsibility of jail security is to prevent escapes, institutional violence, and to maintain order. With minimal leadership, important security measu res such as inmate movement and transportation, searches for contraband, control of equipment and supplies, and inmate well-being can be compromised or not performed at all. The likely hood of improper use of force by staff is also elevated. This not only creates officer safety concerns but exposes the organization to potential liability.

These managers set predetermined goals with employees. The employees agree to follow the leadership and directions of the managers to accomplish these goals. This manager reviews employee results and then provides training or correction when employees fail to meet the goals. Employees receive praise, recognition, or bonuses when the goals are met. An example would be the booking Sergeant, who trains the detention deputies to ensure all necessary paperwork is present and correct before an inmate is accepted into the facility, and that all the paperwork is prepared on time for first appearance. During the time period of 1936 through 1961 there was a change in the establishment of authority with a new personal dominance of Warden Joseph Ragen. The system that was imposed by Ragen had a goal of creating a stable social order at this penitentiary. However, Jacobs mentions that the absence of interference by outside forces enabled him to develop his authoritarian system of internal order. Seeking to achieve his goals for Stateville, Ragen demanded absolute personal loyalty and officers were given an “Officer Rule book”. Assaults on correctional officers in prison are not uncommon. Aggressive inmates need to be kept under control, which can sometimes cause fights between themselves and the officers. According to Stephen C. Light, a graduate from SUNY Plattsburgh “The sample consists of the 694 incidents of assaults by prisoners on offices that were reported to have occurred in 31 New York State prisons” (Light, 1991). The amount of assaults on officers demonstrates how violent inmates can get. There are two different kinds of influences on prison misconduct, there is the combined characteristics of the inmates themselves, and the combined characteristics of the staff in control of them (Camp, Gaes, Langan, Saylor (2003). Prison misconduct has been classified into significant fields related to drug use, violence, property offenses, prison accountability and escapes, security-related offenses, security offenses interfering with daily operations, along with a residual category (Camp, Gaes, Langan, Saylor (2003). Misconduct spoils the effective procedure of the correctional institution, detracting from its capability to present the intentional services to the superior society (Goetting & Howsen (1986).
During the early half of the 19th century, there were two new models of prisons being built in the United States. Along with the new styles of prisons being constructed, two new styles of correctional systems were developed, the Pennsylvania system, and the Auburn, New York system (Mays & Winfree, 2009). Although the designs of the actual prisons were dramatically different, both systems shared similar ideals, with regards to how inmates should spend their days. Ultimately, the Auburn system prevailed as the more popular system of corrections in the United States, with some of the system’s correctional philosophies being used well into the 20th century (Mays & Winfree, 2009). Before discussing the actual philosophies, which were used to manage the inmates in each system, we should first look at the difference in the design of the prisons used in each system.
The jobs of correctional officer are some times overlooked. Correctional officers are playing a huge role in society because they need to perform important tasks. A correctional officer’s job is not easy and can become very stressful at times. Correctional officers are required to enforce and keep order, supervise inmates, help counsel offenders, search inmate cells for contraband, and also report on inmate actions. Correctional officers need to contain power over the prisoners in order to enforce the rules of the prison, or else the prison will not function correctly. In the book, Conover says, “The essential relationship inside a prison is the one between a guard and an inmate…the guard, it is thought, wields all the power, but in truth the inmate has power too” (Conover, p. 207). In the book, the importance of power the prisoner’s hold can be seen through the sudden increase of prisoners, the Stanford Prison Experiment and through the contraband they make.

Prison was designed to house and isolate criminals away from the society in order for our society and the people within it to function without the fears of the outlaws. The purpose of prison is to deter and prevent people from committing a crime using the ideas of incarceration by taking away freedom and liberty from those individuals committed of crimes. Prisons in America are run either by the federal, states or even private contractors. There are many challenges and issues that our correctional system is facing today due to the nature of prisons being the place to house various types of criminals. In this paper, I will address and identify three major issues that I believe our correctional system is facing today using my own ideas along with the researches from three reputable outside academic sources.
