It’s Kind of a Funny Story “I didn’t want to wake up. I was having a much better time asleep. And that’s really sad. It was almost like a reverse nightmare, like when you wake up from a nightmare you’re so relieved. I woke up into a nightmare” (Vizzini 11). We all have our own day to day problems that bring on a whirlwind of stress. It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini illustrates various ways people deal with their problems. Craig draws brain maps, Noelle cuts herself, and Humble allows his health to deteriorate. Similarly, Craig allowed his mental health to deteriorate. The character I relate to the most would be Craig Gilner because, we both have depression, have only a few friends, and are hard on ourselves. One similarity between Craig and myself would be that we both have depression. In the novel, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Craig displays multiple times his depression by nearly killing himself and having to be checked into a mental hospital. When you have depression, you tend to beat yourself up a lot more than the average person. Occasionally, I am too hard on myself and I end up crying or get really angry. As for Craig, he tends to make himself throw up to release his emotions. “What am I always going to do? I'm going to go home and freak out. I'm going to sit with my family and try not to talk about myself and what's wrong. I’m going to try and eat. Then I'm going to try and sleep. I dread it. I can't eat and I can't sleep. I'm not doing well in terms of being a functional human, you know?” (Vizzini …). It’s not very often where I just can’t eat, if anything it would be that I can’t sleep.
