“A Summer in the Cage” is a documentary filmed by Ben Selkow that shows his friend Sam battling with a manic-depressive illness known as bipolar disorder. The main theme of this film is the struggles the main character Sam goes through when battling bipolar disorder. Selkow firsts meets Sam while filming a documentary about street basketball. Ever since that day, they became close friends. Sam decided to help make the documentary with Selkow. Selkow begins to realize after spending so much time with Sam that he had something off about him. At this time, Sam was having is first manic episode. Within this definition are the three D’s. The three D’s are distress, dysfunction, and deviant. Distress is symptoms or experiences that are troubling, confusing, or out of the ordinary to ones self or others. While Ben, the filmmaker and Sam are filming the documentary on street basketball; Sam had his first manic episode. He became very elevated as a whole. Selkow talked about how Sam would call and leave multiple messages all throughout the night. This showed that Sam wasn’t getting the sleep he needed. A troubling symptom Sam had was when he had thoughts of suicide. This was brought on when Sam was at his depressed stage in his disorder. Towards the end of the documentary, he admits to Ben that he did have thoughts of suicide and at one of those times he almost went through with it. Sam’s dad committed suicide after struggling with bipolar disorder. Sam didn’t want to follow in the footsteps of his father, which may have given him the upper hand when having to deal with those thoughts. If Sam didn’t have this psychological disorder he wouldn’t have these troubling or confusing symptoms. Dysfunction is the inability to function as expected in social and occupational activities. When Sam was in his depressed state, he found it hard to hold a job. He would lose interest and was also fatigue. In Sam’s manic state, he found it hard to concentrate; something was always distracting him. He was also very goal oriented. Sam believed he was on a mission to get America back on track. He also wanted to get people to vote for Bill Bradley at the time. Also in Sam’s manic state, he would engage in pleasurable activities that had a high potential for painful consequences. This lead to one of the biggest questions from the movie, how did he become that way? Hirschi’s Control Theory is a theory that states “that social control depends on people anticipating the consequences of their behavior”(Macionis 248). It was shown in the movie that Sam had a complicated relationship with his family, so his past is a big reason as to why he acts so deviant in the future. On of the four types of social control is attachment. Attachment is family, friends and school relationships. Sam was first introduced as one of Benny’s friends “crazy cousin”. It was clear that he did not enjoy having Sam around. This can reveal that Sam has a weak relationship with his family as a whole because he wasn’t even living with his parents. This would lead Sam to acting deviant without worrying about what they would think of him. It was also later revealed that Sam was kicked out of school based on his actions. Sam never had to worry about his family or school once that relationship broke off. Another type of social control is involvement. Involvement can mean many things, but it’s basically about holding a job, going to school, or participating in a sport. The character of Sam, as stated before, was kicked out of school. So, he didn’t have school keeping him away from deviant behaviors. And then there 's the reveal that Sam can’t write or read well. Sam had made an attempt to get a job at a movie store, but he would 've had to do an application, which required him to write. He was shown to be scared and nervous after he attempted at write on the form. Sam had little involvement in anything because he was a poor writer and reader, which lead him to act more deviant. A final reason as to why Sam acted so deviant, was because had little opportunity in life. He was self conscious about that fact that he couldn 't write, so he never made attempts to move up in the world. He

Bipolar disorder, also referred to as manic depression, is a mood disorder. A person with bipolar disorder will have extreme mood shifts between mania, a state of highly elevated euphoric feelings, and depression, a state of despondency and despair. These shifts can take weeks, days, or even minutes to happen. The period between shifts will vary for each individual, depending on the severity of the disorder (Williams & Wilkins, 1999, pp. 5-35).
Client states that he has been experiencing bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression and panics attack for more than three years. Client describe her his anxiety and depression as an isolated feeling, however, he stated that when he feels anxious or depress he speak to his wife. Client also had a bypass surgery in June 2014. The statements that I read in this article will only make me a better social worker. The DSM-5 makes everything clear for us to understand the specifiers of the disorders. It is my job to pay attention to the patient’s behavior and current situation to be able to understand and rule out any other issues that the patient might have. One of the most common misconceptions about bipolar disorder is that those that suffer from it have unpredictable emotions, they'll be happy and smiling one minute and the next they'll be upset for no reason. People who have the diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder ultimately show symptoms seen in schizophrenia, depression and mania. Schizophrenic symptoms are categorized as either being negative or positive. Hallucinations, delusions and thinking disturbances are the most common symptoms of schizophrenia which are also characterized as positive symptoms.
