Introduction
The contemporary North American novels The Virgin Suicides, A Complicated Kindness and The Ice Storm similarly engage with the struggles of growing up in an isolated community within the frame of the teenage narrative. This struggle in terms of isolation is significantly influenced by religion. It must be noted that religion does not play a part in The Ice Storm. However, it is philosophy, Mother Nature and fate that influence the enclosure of the characters. As a result, nature places emphasis on the isolation that was already present before the storm. However, it is the parent’s actions and lack of communication that is the cause of the family collapse. In every family dynamic, especially when there are young children that are coming of age, it is the parents that are the holding bond of the family structure. In the text, it is evident that both Ben and Elena have marital issues. However, they are avoiding confronting them by distracting themselves from the issue. This is evident as Ben is trying to have an affair with family friend Janey, while his wife is Elena hiding behind books. This behaviour has a lasting impact on their children and creates a strong dislike towards their family dynamic, which is evident from the following quotation: “Fucking family. Feeble and forlorn and floundering and foolish and frustrating and functional and sad, sad. Fucking family. Fiend or foe” (Moody, 274). As a result, both Paul and Wendy do not have the parental guidance as their parents are too caught up in their own issues. Therefore, both children can do and behave however they please. Similarly to the way that the Lisbon girls from The Virgin Suicides use religious images as a cry for help, it could be argued that both Wendy and Paul are experimenting with alcohol, drugs and sexual acts to gain the attention of their parents. The clip ‘Trouble with Evan’ narrates the struggle of a boy named Evan that puts his stepdad Mike and his mother Karen through stress because of his ill manners. Despite him being at a tender age of 11 years and in 6th grade, his mannerism is worrying because he is already engaging in morally unacceptable activities such as shoplifting, smoking, and gross disobedience, bullying other children and even stealing from his parents. Therefore, this puts his parents under severe psychological stress as they try to figure where their parenting is going wrong in a bid together to make him grow morally upright (Henning, 2016). Evan’s behavior was also straining his relationship with his parents and this stressed the parents as they tried to figure out different ways in which they could once again improve their relationship with their son. In addition, the clip revolves around trying to uncover the mystery as to what could be causing Evan’s unacceptable behavior.
Winter tries to do whatever she can to take care of her sister, help her mother, get her father free and everything back to the way that it use to be. In Kate Chopin’s “The Storm”, sin happens to make a bond stronger than before. The story illustrates a couple who seem to be similar to the nature surrounding them. Both Calixta and Bobinôt happen to be going through a stormy period in their marriage. Although they are going through this turbulent period, Bobinôt’s actions display his imperfect but unconditional love for his wife. Bobinôt may not be the husband Calixta dreams of, but throughout the story he illustrates that it does not matter what happens, the storm will pass and he will love her no matter what.
Family is one of the most important institutions in society. Family influences different aspects of a person’s life, such as their religion, values, morals and behavior. Unfortunately, problems may arise when an individual’s belief system or behavior does not coincide with that of family standards. Consequently, individuals may be forced to repress their emotions or avoid acting in ways that that are not acceptable to the family. In the novel The Rain God, written by Arturo Islas, we are presented with a story about a matriarchal family that deals with various conflicts. One major internal conflict is repression. Throughout the novel the characters act in strange ways and many of the family members have internal “monsters” that represent the past that they are repressing. In his article, “The Historical Imagination in Arturo Islas’s The Rain God and Migrant Souls”, Antonio C. Marquez’s implicitly asserts a true idea that The Rain God is a story about repression. Marquez’s idea can be supported from an analysis of secondary sources and a reading of the primary text.

They made many mistakes but don’t seem to care much because they know their children will forgive them. Jeannette 's mother sees her weakness for her father and uses it against her. When ever she messed up she told the kids they “should forgive her the same way [they] always forgave Dad for is drink”(174). She expects them to forgive her just like they forgive their dad because she knows they always think the best of them. She messes up endless amounts of time but the kids forgive them every time because they care about them. They are very selfish, and exploit their kids love. Her father knows she has “a soft spot for him the way no one else in the family did, and he took advantage of it”(209). Jeannette know knows her dad is using her for her forgiveness, but she doesn’t seem to mind because she loves him so much. Her parents use their love to get what they want, and since the kids unconditionally love them. Her mother and father constantly need Jeannette’s help and love, more than she needs theirs. If jeannette ever says no they become disappointed and make her feel bad. But since they are family, they always stick
First of all, the book follows the themes of isolation, innocence, and corrupted maturity through the setting. In
Pauls past relationship with his dad has been rough because of his dad leaving shawn. Paul feels as though his dad left the family so he didn't have to worry about shawn and their family problems. During the time his dad was gone paul has been angry that shawn hasn't been getting the fatherly support he needs to feel normal. “My dad couldn't stay with us and help us take care of my brother--no, he left me to handle all that so he could jet around and make a bunch of money whining about his tragic plight”(4). Paul realizes that if his dad really cared about their family situation he wouldn't have left the family in the position he was in.
This book teaches the importance of self-expression and independence. If we did not have these necessities, then life would be like those in this novel. Empty, redundant, and fearful of what is going on. The quotes above show how different life can be without our basic freedoms. This novel was very interesting and it shows, no matter how dismal a situation is, there is always a way out if you never give up, even if you have to do it alone.
The theme of isolation is established and developed through the setting of Crow Lake. Located against the deserted territory of Northern Ontario, Crow Lake is a diffident farming settlement that is “... linked to the outside world by one dusty road and the railroad tracks” (Lawson 9).

In the beginning of the story, Paul seems to be a typical teenage boy: in trouble for causing problems in the classroom. As the story progresses, the reader can infer that Paul is rather withdrawn. He would rather live in his fantasy world than face reality. Paul dreaded returning home after the Carnegie Hall performances. He loathed his "ugly sleeping chamber with the yellow walls," but most of all, he feared his father. This is the first sign that he has a troubled homelife. Next, the reader learns that Paul has no mother, and that his father holds a neighbor boy up to Paul as "a model" . The lack of affection that Paul received at home caused him to look elsewhere for the attention that he craved.

The landscape describes the conflict, both barren and fruitful. Alongside of one rail line long, white hills stretch across the horizon, the country before them "brown and dry" (143).
