Fear is a very powerful emotion. It can overcome someone at any moment and control them. It causes people to make irrational decisions and compels people to do things they never thought they would do ad in extreme situations it forces people to kill. Ishmael Beah was in one of these extreme situations, his childhood was stolen from him the moment war reached his home and ripped him from his loved ones. Fear changes people, and in some cases for the worse. There are four stages of fear; freeze, flight, fright and fight which Ishmael goes through on an intensified level.

The person feels they need to attempt to put as much space as possible in between them and the situation that causes them the fear. Ishmael, Junior and their friends realize that they are not safe and need to flee from the war. “Talloi was a very fast runner, even when we were younger. But on that evening we were able to keep up with him” (Beah 25). Ishmael is saying that before the war Talloi could out run any of them, however as the boys are fleeing they are so scared that their pace has increased and they can now keep up with their friend. Ishmael finally meets this stage when he begins to fight in the war. He becomes addicted to drugs and fighting. The blood and guts no longer bother him and his only concern is to get revenge by murdering those who he believes killed his family. “We went out two more times that week and I had no problem shooting my gun” (Beah 120). Ishmael has reached the final stage of fear. He is attempting to kill the thing that is causing his fear, before it kills him. Ishmael will eventually overcome all four stages of fear, but it will take a lot of hard work and dedication from many
