Many people have the perception of democracy as the perfect solution to running a country. This may be because we often use the idea of democracy in our everyday lives. For example, children in schools have incorporated voting as a mechanism for making decisions such as choosing activities and electing class council members. It is also becoming more and more popular in the workplace as it’s fair nature is appealing for any kind of policy making. So what else can we expect? From a young age we have been taught that democracy is fair and efficient but the reality is that this is not the case.

Bribery, intimidation, destruction of ballots and misrecording of votes are a few examples of fraud that can occur in an election. A Channel 4 investigation found that the Conservative party abused the election rules in 2014 by failing to declare certain election expenditures, which if they had been declared you would find that three Conservatives breached the legal spending limits. Their investigation revealed receipts for more than 2000 nights of hotels stays, none of which were declared by the party. They also found that they spent £18,000 on accommodating the Conservative party employees on one occasion and £718 to accommodate activists who were supporting a “Stop Farage” campaign, all of which were not declared, therefore breaking election laws. But what is more surprising is that most electoral fraud is committed by voters. In the 2004 English elections, 22 people were found guilty of electoral malpractice and in the 2010 General Elections there were 232 alleged cases of electoral fraud, 137 of which had no further police investigation because there was either insufficient evidence to bring a prosecution or no offender could be found.
