Investigating a Correlation Between Mathematics and English Literature Scores
Aim:
The aim of my investigation is to find out if there is any correlation
between individualÂ’s scores in GCSE Mathematics and English
Literature. Also, I aim to find out whether the correlation (if
present) is negative or positive.
Reason for Investigation:
I have decided to investigate this as at my previous high school many
of my teachers, but in particular my English literature teacher,
thought that if a pupil was a high achiever in the English Literature
GCSE then it was unlikely that they were also a high achiever in the
Mathematics GCSE. She had reached this conclusion through the
knowledge that English Literature is a creative subject whereÂ’ as
Mathematics depended more on logic and Memory. If her conclusion
proved to be correct my results will have a negative correlation. This
would mean that if the scores in Mathematics were high she would
expect the individualÂ’s results in English Literature to lower.
I disagree with her conclusion. I think that if you are a high
achiever in English Literature you will also be a high achiever in
Mathematics. I think that as both subjects are challenging and require
analysis of the text/results that both subjects depend on the pupil
having a high intelligence. If my conclusion is proved to be right
then my results will have a positive correlation. This means that if a
pupil achieved high scores in Mathematics I expect them to achieve
high scores in English Literature.
Both the conclusions made by myself and the English literature teacher
expect that there will be a correlation between the GCSE scores
obtained in English Literature and Mathematics.
Data Collection and Sampling:
I obtained my raw data from the high school which I previously
attended as I thought this was only fair as both the English
literature teacher and I had based our conclusion on the results from

Standardized testing requires student to answer same or similar questions with given answer choices that are often in multiple choice or true or false form. Dating back from 2200 B.C standardized testing is recorded being used in China ,where people applying for government jobs had to take an examination ,testing their knowledge on confucian philosophy and poetry.During the mid-1800s in Industrial Revolution ,soon after child labor laws were enacted taking children out of farms and factories and putting them into schools the use of standardized test was introduced to America in Boston. Standardized testing was being used to compare schools and teaching quality; Boston’s program was soon adopted nation wide. Types of standardized test including the most common achievement tests and aptitude test. Achievement test measure the progress a student has made academically in a time period. Whereas an aptitude test attempt to predict a student’s ability to succeed academically.Standardized test are used on a large scale because computers can score them quickly, consistently, and inexpensively rather than open ended essay questions which need to be evaluated essay by essay, though essay questions allow for deeper thinking.The purpose for standardized testing is to create a standard on which all students can learn equally,but in “The Real threat to American Schools” by Alfie Kohn, the author claims that idea of standards might not be true. The author makes an interesting point in that if the possibility that all students met the state standards and passed all the tests would those students be considered ‘perfectly educated’ of would the politicians and test takers believe instead that the test was too easy and the standards were too low. Deanna was administered the Woodcock Johnson Test of Achievement (WJ-IV ACH). The WJ-IV ACH measured Deanna’s academic achievement skills in reading, math and written language. This is measured based on Deanna’s scores on the Broad Achievement cluster, which is a combination of her scores in Broad Reading, Broad Math and Broad Written Language. Deanna’s scores were fairly consistent ranging in the average to high average range. On the overall Broad Achievement cluster, Deanna scored in the average range with a Standard Score of 102 (Percentile Rank=56, Confidence Interval=100-104). On the Broad Reading cluster, Deanna scored in the average range with a Standard Score of 97 (PR=42, CI=94-100). John Allen Paulos is a popular speaker and writer as well as a professor of mathematics at Temple University in Philadelphia with a Ph.D. in the field. Paulos used to be a columnist writer for ABC News’ “who’s counting?” series where he wrote multiple stories such as, “Do SAT Scores Really Predict Success?” where he talks about how SAT scores do foresee a student’s success not only in college but later in life. This is a particularly interesting article to read because there are parts where I questioned Paulos’ ethos because of some of his comments did not make sense. On the other hand, he uses some statistics to strengthen his arguments as well as talk about the correlation between SAT scores and a first-year student’s success. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), which is implemented by the Australian Curriculum and Assessment Reporting Authority (ACARA), is a system-wide, standardised assessment program that measures high-stakes achievement for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia. Rather than being focused on content, NAPLAN is a basic skills assessment program which tests the essential skills in reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. Although many resources are available to teachers about the nature of NAPLAN, the ways in which NAPLAN improves literacy and numeracy skills for Australian students and what stake-holders should do with the data from the system-wide program, excessive debate continues to circulate within the education sector about the impact and usefulness of NAPLAN in Australian schools as a measure of student and teacher achievement.
One of the biggest problems Americans face today is a US student’s underwhelming academic performance. When compared to other countries, the United States comes in 18th place in math literacy and 25th place in reading literacy. The problem is not just a standard problem throughout the country, as there is much variation between graduation and subject literacy rates, with huge differences also between schools alone. These statistics are disappointing because the US is considered one of the largest world powers. The disparities in American students academic achievement is also detrimental because they are less able to compete in the global market place. Many things have been used to explain this disparity but race has often led as the main explanation. The racial disparities in academic achievement have also led to acts of law, such as the Hispanic Education act, which focus on improving test scores in New Mexico’s minority students. While there is a correlation between race and academic performance, I believe there are other factors, like economic class, which also have a profound effect on a students’ academic achievement. If my hypothesis is correct, review of further literature should show discrepancies between students of different socioeconomic status as a major influence on a student’s academic achievement.

However, some argue that genetics and nature are more linked to intelligence than environment. One of these people is Arthur Jenson, an American psychologist who concluded that intelligence was mainly hereditary by finding a significant gap between the average I.Q. scores of colored and white people (McLeod). Although this experiment has dignity, it can not be proven that intelligence has nothing to do with the environment where these skills are brought forth. More specifically, if one person is more motivated to learn and is in an environment where learning is encouraged, they will be more intelligent than one who is not motivated or equipped to learn efficiently and become intelligent. In fact, in a study conducted by F. N. Freeman, K. J. Holzinger, and H. H. Newman of the University of Oxford in 1937, average I.Q. scores of identical twins raised together in the same environment had a .88 correlation coefficient, whereas identical twins raised in different environments had a .77 correlation coefficient (“Effects of Hereditary and Environment on individual Differences"). Since r = 0.75 it can be simplified as r2 which results in an amount of 0.56. IQ scores/percentage made of 56% of the testing factors. The other 44% could have been various other issues/variables/factors that students are affected by. Issues like social settings, study time, personal home status, parenting ect. The correlation here is simple. We can surmise that as an individual’s IQ rises so to should the GPA of that specific individual. Correlation only displays the relationship between the data. However even when we use correlation to calculate values or difference scores, the result is the same, and doesn’t measure the outcome. If want to determine causation/connection it would be by an amount both IQ and GPA increased. This would make the case that correlation is not applicable to predict
While numeracy and mathematics are often linked together in similar concepts, they are very different from one another. Mathematics is often the abstract use of numbers, letters in a functional way. While numeracy is basically the concept of applying mathematics in the real world and identifying when and where we are using mathematics. However, even though they do have differences there can be a similarity found, in the primary school mathematics curriculum (Siemon et al, 2015, p.172). Which are the skills we use to understand our number systems, and how numeracy includes the disposition think mathematically.
