In Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” has a unique tone illustrating the themes of the story. When first reading the story, the “lottery” drawing is portrayed as a positive outcome, where people are happy and excited etc. Three themes are portrayed throughout the story. Those themes include scapegoating, man’s inherent evil, and hanging on to ancient and outdated rituals. The theme of scapegoating is shown though Tessie, who has committed no crime, but for the good of the community must be stoned. Man’s inherent evil can be best shown when you were born good, and society turned you evil, and vice versa.
