Who am I? Who are you? Who is he? Who is she? Who are we? These are all common questions we ask ourselves at some point in our lifetimes. Self discovery is quite a normal phase through the course of life. I, along with many others, suffer through identity issues and other psych problems on a daily basis due to medication we must take in order to control our ADD/ADHD. Both of these disorders are similar and different simultaneously. ADD is Attention Deficit Disorder meaning that the person has a very short attention span. ADHD is Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder which means the person not only has a short attention span, but also cannot sit still. Well, there are three aspects of these disorders that all explain why most parents and physicians use medication as a solution. These three aspects are: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These symptoms can make it difficult for a child with ADHD to succeed in school, get along with other children, or simply finish tasks at home. Thus, making medicine seem as though it is the only option to ensure the child has a successful life. One of the main reasons for medication treatment for these disorders is because of the inattentiveness. The short attention span not only results in being easily distracted, but also missing details, forgetting things, and frequently moving from one activity to another. A child can become bored with a task after only a few minutes unless it is something that is enjoyable to them. They also have difficulty processing any kind of new information as quickly as others and they struggle to follow instructions. Another reason for this treatment is the hyperactivity that is often present in most of these cases. The level of hyperactivity can range depending on how severe the disorder is. It can cause the child to fidget and squirm, talk non stop, or constantly move. The child may touch or play with anything and everything in sight. Some of which seem utterly ridiculous and others more serious. Depending on who views it, most of these side effects are negative. The psychostimulant medication used in the treatment of ADD/ADHD most often have negative side effects. Majority of the common side effects of this type of medication treatment for ADD/ADHD are: restlessness, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, headaches, mood swings, depression, dizziness, and racing heartbeats. These medications can cause personality changes such as becoming withdrawn, rigid or less talkative. They can also raise blood pressure and/or heart rate. With just this small list of numerous negative results, why would a parent want to put their child through all of this and risk future health problems due to this medicine? Along with these already sketchy side effects, there are a number of safety concerns that involve these psychostimulants. The most frightening of these concerns is sudden death. These medications have been found to cause sudden death in children and adults who have heart conditions. That should make parents think twice before putting their child on any stimulant
