Roger Caras once said, “Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole.” Hound dogs are one of the many types of dogs that can make our lives whole, like Roger Caras suggested. The four types of hounds that I will be talking about today are Bloodhounds, Dachshunds, Bluetick Coonhounds, and American Foxhounds.

Bloodhounds are sweet, easy going dogs when they are not working. Officially recognized as a breed in 1885, and they are currently the 52nd most popular breed in America. They come in three colors: black and tan, liver and tan, and red. Bloodhounds originated in Belgium, with records of Bloodhounds going back to the 3rd century according to the American Kennel Club. Dachshunds are very curious and can be very friendly, but not always. Dachshunds were officially recognized as a dog breed in 1885, and they are currently the 13th most popular breed in the United States. Dachshunds were bred in Germany to hunt badgers, with records of them dating back to the 15th century. Dachshunds come in a variety of twelve colors and three different markings. The life expectancy of Dachshunds is twelve to sixteen years.

Bluetick Coonhounds, or Blueticks for short, are very smart and loyal dogs. Blueticks were officially recognized as a breed in 2009 and are currently the 121st most popular breed in America. Blueticks come in two colors (blueticked or blueticked and tan) and can have black spots. They are not as large as Bloodhounds, but are quite a bit bigger than Dachshunds.
