The ancient Greeks provided many contributions to Western civilization today. There were several influential people of Greece, including Socrates, Hippocrates, and Euclid. They all brought their own contributions to Greek society that have carried on today. All these men have make substantial contributions to mathematics, philosophy, medicine, theater, architecture and sports. There are many ideas that are continued today that were originated in Greece. One Greek philosopher who contributed to society is Socrates. Socrates lived from about 470-399 B.C.E. He is one of the most influential philosophers of Greece whose ideas are still being used today. Socrates developed the Socratic Method, which is a technique to problem solving and sharing of ideas. A statue created by Myron is the famous The Discus Thrower (Diskobolus) (doc 8). This statue depicts a heavily muscled man with a discus, which represents the Olympics. The whole idea of the Olympics puts a heavy emphasis on athletes and those with extreme athletic ability. It also emphasizes the idea of watching sports as a main form of entertainment. These ideas carry on today in several ways. The most obvious being the continued existence of the Olympics. Thought they are quite different than they once were, the original idea of a competition of sports to find who is the fastest or strongest or most talented is still is there. Another idea of this is in high schools and the idea of the homecoming football game. Everyone gathers together to celebrate the football team and root for them to win.
