As a society, as the world, people read every day. Though we have some poor literacy rates in certain parts of the earth, maybe 100% of us wish to read. It’s a challenge in many cases, even for leisure. It’s simple, to be great at reading one must put focus and attention to it as if it were a hobby.
We aren’t born with a high literacy rate as if it was a gift but some become more advanced than others as they grow. As explained by Alexie- “ I taught myself to read and I was ahead of the other Indians in the reservation.” (par. 5) To develop reading skills is to take practice and concentration. When kids start learning some second language young, it gets pin to their head, it’s a lifestyle. However, it must be constant learning. Similar to Alexie’s experience- “I was reading a superman comic as a 3-year-old Spokane Indian boy, but I couldn’t remember the plot.”

We’ll just hypothetically kill ourselves with a headache. “Taking breaks is biologically restorative. Naps are even better.” (Levitan, par 18) Our brains needs to be treated like a battery. So what if we read to take a break from playing basketball. Well it’s just not that simple if your mind isn’t into it. “Our brains have two dominant modes of attention; The task negative and the task positive networks. A third component of the attentional system, attentional filter, helps to orient our attention. The task positive is more engaged while the negative is active in wandering: as simple as a seesaw” (Levitan, Par. 4,7) The positive and third component of our mind can help our reading skills become our hobby, but the wandering will take our focus away from it. Though, it can’t be 100% true because maybe there was a moment an individual read and something just hit them. The task negative mode may had related a topic to the reading material. On top of that, people will wander their mind to elaborate on a topic or idea and be motivated to
On October 10th, 2017 at Springhurst Elementary School, I conducted a “Reading Interest Survey” and the “Elementary Reading Attitude Survey.” These surveys were conducted on a 1st grade student, Jax, to determine what his feelings are towards reading in different settings, what genres he prefers to read, and interests. It was found that Jax doesn’t mind reading, but prefers a few different topics. This was evident through his raw score of 30 on recreational reading, and a raw score of 31 on academic reading.
Reading is on the decline and our reading skills are declining right along with the amount of reading we do. This is happening right across the board through both genders, all age groups and education levels, people are busy and they just do not have time to read books that they are not required to read for school or work. There are serious consequences to this neglect of reading that will continue to worsen if ignored. We need to take notice of what is happening to our culture and stop this situation from continuing, we must act to correct these issues that we are faced with. These things are discussed in the essay “Staying Awake’’ by Ursula K. Le Guin who uses the NEA essays “To Read or Not to Read’’ and “Reading at Risk’’ to support her argument that there is a decline in the amount of time that we are spending on reading and our ability to understand what it is that we are reading.
The type of reading that is on the decline, is that which requires thought, the assimilation and accommodation of ideas, and effort—close reading. This form of reading involves the careful, sustained interpretation of literary text that comes from observing a pieces minute detail. In accordance with the definition of reading provided by the Princeton dictionary, “the cognitive process of understanding a written linguistic message”, the methods used other than closed reading are not truly reading. Many have argued that the creation of new technology has actually enabled more people to read, but when compared with reading’s definition, this is not true. Reading in not mindlessly skimming articles and not knowing what they mean afterwards, but being able to comprehend the material that one has read, including its many facets.
Living in the Southern United States during eighteenth century was a difficult time for African-Americans. Majority of them were slaves who received manipulation, sexual abuse and brutally whips to the spin. They were treated this way in order to stop them from gaining hope, knowledge and understanding of the world. Some African Americans managed to obtain these qualities from books and use them to escape from slavery. Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist who wrote an autobiography, from which the excerpt "Learning to Read and Write" explains how he developed literacy. In the excerpt, an African American slave banned from learning to read and write, breaks the law in an attempt to free his mind from the restricted beliefs of his master. One significant idea portrayed from Douglass's ordeal is that reading and writing is a vital skill that benefits humanity.
I almost forgot that I had a problem with reading. It’s so fascinating to know about people and their various opinions regarding their relationship with reading. For example in Richard Rodriquez’s essay he tries to explain himself when one day the nun concluded a session by asking him why he was so reluctant to read by himself. He then says, “I tried to explain; said something about the way written words made me feel alone---almost, I wanted to add but didn’t, as when I spoke to myself in a room just emptied of furniture.” (Rodriguez, page 294). Unlike the author, my case was completely opposite of him. I figured when I’m alone in an isolated place, I understand what I read way more in depth than I ever can while I’m surrounded by people. Though I truly like to read occasionally now, that still doesn’t mean I have become a
On a daily basis, people read to increased their vocabulary, improve writing skills and keep updated with daily news. However, we waste
Reading is an essential element in our everyday lives. What was the first thing that you learned in school? It was the ability to read. Exercising that ability by reading voluntarily keeps our minds active when we’re out of school. It is a supplement to our minds. The more you read, the more you know!
In today’s society, a vast number of people are well educated. They have the equal opportunity to choose their own path in life by getting an education. A primary educational aspect of every human being is to learn to read. Being able to read is a primary goal of people in human society, as well as important in itself to society; it takes people far beyond their wildest dreams. A person who is literate has few limitations on what they can do; the world is an open playing field, because a person that is literate has the ability to become very successful in life.
“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” Although this quote is more famously said by Frederick Douglass, I would often hear my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. McComb, say it throughout my first year of schooling. I remembered this quote, even after roughly fourteen years, mainly because as I have grown I realized how accurate it was. Every single day I have found myself reading, whether it is an assignment, some form of literature, or social media through the internet; therefore, I couldn’t imagine how my life would be today if I never learned to read. When it comes down to it, reading plays an important role throughout my life when dealing with school, personal interest, and my future.
While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
Being literate defines who I am, and forms an integral part of my life. From the practical to the creative, it aids, and enables me to perform in the tasks that modern society dictates. I shall explore the many aspects of my life that are affected by literacy. Through this, understanding in greater depth what it means for me, to be literate.
Reading gives someone the chance to take a break and relax while your brain is being fed an immense amount of wonderful knowledge. As you are turning each page you are constantly learning new words and letting your brain take off with imagination. Dana Gioia states that, “Reading requires sustained and focused attention as well as active use of memory and imagination”. You don’t realize it, but while someone is reading a good book their brain is enjoying them. Even if you are reading something that doesn’t seem so enjoyable, keep reading. I am sure with in that very moment, you will find joy between those lines. Let your brain get lost with beautiful thoughts of your own, while reading someone else’s
Just like waking up in the morning and inhaling my first conscious-breath of the day, reading is something essential to me. As I child, I used to dream of having my own and private reading place where I would sit and spend my whole day reading my favorite books without any disturbance. Thanks to my dreams, I now have a wonderful private library in my house. This place is not similar to any other ordinary library but a mini place where you can find a massive number of interesting books of different varieties.
Nowadays, many people think reading is not necessary, since there are so many sources of information and types of entertainment, such as TV, cinema and the Internet. I believe they are wrong because reading is very beneficial in many ways.
Reading – we do it every day. In almost every aspect of our lives and often take it for granted. Reading is essential for human communication and increasing knowledge. However, because reading is so important even a small change can have a significantly large impact on our modern society. We are currently in a midst of a cultural revolution. In which the printed word is being transformed by the digital.
