Learning how to read and to write is different for everyone, but it was extremely difficult for slaves. Some slaves like Frederick Douglass became incredibly intelligent and was one of the most important leaders against the antislavery movement. Unfortunately some slaves were given any opportunity to learn how to read and write. In many places, it was even illegal for them to learn how to read and write, “but some learned anyway, and In Maryland, it was not illegal for slaves to learn to read and write, but whites were discouraged from teaching them.” Whites may have discouraged this because slave owners were fearful of the slaves becoming intelligent and overthrowing them with this power they might have gained.
