In the book NightJohn by Gary Paulsen, a slave named NightJohn believes that all people should know how to read and write. However in slavery it is a huge risk to learn to read and write. NightJohn is faced by several obstacles in his life, making it harder to do what he believes in, but he is determined so he keeps trying. NightJohn knew that in order to achieve his goals of teaching other slaves to read he had to be determined to do what you believe is tight, despite the circumstances.
First of all slavery is a horrible place, it would be thought NightJohn would just do his work and not try to make the “master” mad or go against anything he says. However nightJohn goes against the “master’s” rules and teaches Sarny to read. NightJohn knows …show more content…

The other slaves who tried to run away were torn to pieces by the dogs. At more one point in the story, Nightjohn escapes slavery and gets out alive to be free, but Nightjohn sacrifices his freedom for a better cause, which is teaching people to read and write. He does this so they can document what is happening to them “ We all have to read and write so we can write about this… what they do to us” (page 58). This shows how determined Nightjohn was to help people to learn no matter the risk.
Further in the book, Nightjohn escapes for the last time for this plantation to run to a place of unknown. Sarny is sure she’ll never see him again because he would be crazy to risk going back to slavery, but NightJohn is determined not to give up even trough the tough circumstances. Nightjohn comes back to the plantation in the night risking being brought back to slavery, to take Sarny to pit school so she can expand her understanding of words. “School-we got to go to school. Don't you want to learn the rest of the letters” (Pg 85).
“Soon, Sarny, soon you'll be able to read them all. All of you will. Now lets start so you can get back” (pg 89).This shows by the end of the book Nightjohn started achieving his goal of teaching slaves to read because he was determined and didn't give up.
