What prompted me to write about this issue is because I was really taken aback by their hospitality when we first reached Philippines. Throughout the whole trip, they have always put us as priority before them themselves. There and then, I realised that it is a part of their culture and customs. Henceforth, I began to look into the Philippines hospitality and spirit to find out more about it.

Philippines spirit is all about being resilient, which is defined as “tending to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change”. (Merriam Webster, n.d.)

Before I continue with the Philippines spirit, just to share some background information about Philippines. Philippines is located “along the Ring of Fire, or typhoon belt – a large Pacific Ocean region” and it has 3 main seasons, one of which is the rainy monsoon season which begins in mid-year and lasts until around October, bringing winds and rain from the south west and typhoons. Due to all of these reasons, “in the past century and a half, the Philippines has experienced three particularly severe earthquakes, in 1863, 1937 and 1968, as well as many hundreds or lesser quakes and tremours.” (Paul A. Rodell, 2002) On top of that, Philippines “has suffered from an inexhaustible number of deadly typhoons… volcano eruptions and other natural disasters. Annually, approximately 80 typhoons develop above tropical waters, of which 19 enter the Philippine region and six to nine make landfall, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). Violent tropical storms, such as the latest Haiyan typhoon, can generate 10 times as much energy as the Hiroshima atomic bomb.” (Jessie Wingard, Anne-Sophie Bränd...

...d courage and attracting more positive things too in the process.” (Olive E., n.d.) To have a resilient spirit is beneficial in many ways and attitude changes the things that people do. To have a positive attitude may be a mental energy draining process but the effects that come along with it are rewarding and those are what that will keep us going as well as moving forward.
Next, to be hospitable is another trait of the Filipinos that is worth learning for this is a way to build a strong foundation for ties and relations. By being hospitable, it will bring about a lot of advantages as well. Stronger ties will be established and there will be more trust and faith between people, which is especially important in terms of business deal. All of these will bring about a positive impact on the country’s economy and will improve the people’s standard of living overall.
