I am always asking why, how, who, and when. Constantly, my husband tells me I am worse than a two year old that has just learned the word why. As far as self-confidence, I was taught from a young age that anything is possible, and with hard work I could become anything. There is nothing in this world, I cannot accomplish; I just have to decide to want to do it. Weaknesses that I have as a self-motivated learner include organization and setting an appropriate pace for learning. By nature, I am not an organized person, if my desk is a mess, I can find anything; on the other hand, if everything is put away, I can find nothing. When doing school work, I have a tendency to try and get everything done in one sitting. Once I start on the assignments, I do not want to stop until everything is done. Knowing that taking breaks helps to retain information, I still try to accomplish everything at once.

Schedule my learning times around other duties, i.e. work, meals, husband

Intrinsic motivation has several advantages over extrinsic motivation. First of all, intrinsically motivated learners are more likely to select challenging tasks. Second, evidence suggested that learners gain more knowledge when they read material that they consider intrinsically interesting. Third, the conditions that support intrinsic motivation also promote greater creativity and better conceptual learning. Fourth, intrinsic motivation is associated with greater pleasure and more active involvement in activities.” (p.
“Motivation is the process whereby goal-orientated activity is instigated and sustained” (Schunk, Pintrich & Meece, 2008. As cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010, p.284). Motivation comes in many forms and can be divided into two broad categories - extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivators are external factors which can motivate a student; rewards are an example of this. An issue with extrinsic motivators is that the desire for the learner to participate often lessens, once the rewards are withdrawn (McCullers, 1987). On the other hand intrinsic motivation comes from within - learning for the joy of it - where the desire to learn leads to a higher level of knowledge, and is a reward in itself. Kohn (1996, p.285) states that research suggests, “Rewards actually decrease interest in intrinsically motivating tasks, therefore sending the wrong message about learning” (as cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010a)
My mayor weakness, by far is procrastination. I tend to leave my assignment for last minute, by cause of improper time management with everything I have going on in my daily life. I often find myself doing 5 page assignments under pressure to turn it in on time. I feel that I don’t accomplish my best work when I rush or try to organize my thought during the middle of the night because I’m often too tired and sleepy. I always think that I can do my work successfully and be happy with my grade and lately I realized that at the end of the semester I have to work twice as hard to pass my class with a grade that I will be happy

Motivation is also the key to being a successful independent learner. I learned that being motivated to learn has made me feel better about teaching myself the concept. Being motivated is not having someone else to force you to complete a task. For example, I took my own notes to study for my exam, and after I took my first exam in Pre-Calculus I received an B on the test. I am now motivated to make an higher grade on the next exam.

In order to be an effective teacher there needs to be an understanding that we all learn differently, this means that no single teaching strategy is effective for all students/learners all the time. This makes teaching a complex process because you need to understand and meet the requirements of all of your learners. Students learn best when they aren’t asked to simply memorise information but when they form their own understandings of what is being taught. When a student has successfully learnt a new idea they are able to then intergrate this information with their previously learnt information and make sense of it. To be an effective teacher you need to work jointly with students to asses where they are at, be able to give feedback on how the student is going and ensure that they are understanding the lesson (Killen, 2013) According to Lovat and Smith (2003) students learning must result in a change in a student’s understanding of the information being taught. In order to show understanding they must be able to share this information with others and want to learn more (Killen, 2013). In order to have a deeper understanding of what is being taught they need to be aware of the relationship that exists between what they knew previously and the new information that is being learned (Killen, 2013).. Students need to be given goals that they can achieve in order to feel a sense of mastery over their own learning, this gives students motivation that they are able to complete tasks and to keep going.
Some of my few major strengths are my ability to go out and meet new people that I have never met before and be able to socialize and commute with them. Adding to that is my ability to study for long periods of time and be able to memorize pretty much anything for example, vocab. Lastly, my biggest strengths is my drive to become the absolute best person and develop myself to go from being a college student to a college graduate to a hard working man. I only see myself going down one road and that is down the successful path of having a good solid job that I earned with my hard worked and earned degree. Some of my few weaknesses include reading, staying focused, and staying organized. Reading has never been a strength of mine ever since I was a child, unless it is a topic I enjoy. Also my focus level’s vary on the importance of the assignment, if it is not so much important I may not get it done a day before it is due compared to if it were a big assignment. Self-concept of the learner- Adult learners are naturally self- directed which means they will take ownership of what and how to learn and how to manage their time and learning.
I have honestly identified speaking, mathematics, positive visualization and optimism, seeking support from others, and self esteem and confidence as my weaknesses (Bethel University, 2014). The common theme that I have found with my weaknesses involves my shy and quiet personality (Bethel University, 2014). I have a weakness when it comes to the geometry side of mathematics. No matter how many times that I take measurements for a project, I always have to make multiple trips to the store to buy more materials (Bethel University, 2014).
