The movie IOUSA is a documentary that draws attentions to the impact and magnitude of federal debt to the United States of America. It explores the history of the US federal debt since the independence day and the major events and the action that were taken. The movie discusses four major type of fiscal deficits demonstrating the irresponsibility and danger in each one of these types. These four sections are: the budget deficit, saving deficit, trade deficit and finally leadership deficit. First, the budget deficit. It’s basically the idea that the government spending is greater that its earning. They are two ways to manage this deficit, either to cut spending (Medicare, Medicaid and social security etc.) or increase taxes. However, each solution has its disadvantages. If the government increased taxes, people will spend less money and if they cut spending, people will complain about it arguing that this may hurt the nation. Second, the saving deficit. This deficit has to do with having responsible leader who are willing to increase awareness and make beneficial changes in the nation. In my opinion, the federal debt is a serious threat to the US that must be politically address whenever possible. I believe that the candidates of the 2016 presidential election should make this issue one of the top priorities to discuss and to dictate a considerable amount of work to fix it. That is because the worse the federal debt is, the worse the future would be to the nation. Also, voters must be well educated about this issue in order to shape their decision in voting for the candidate that seems most powerful and confident about this problem. Every day in New York City, hundreds of people walk past a huge digital billboard with giant numbers across its face. Each person who walks past this billboard sees a slightly different arrangement of numbers, growing larger every second. This board is the National Debt Clock, representing the over 14 trillion dollars currently owed by the United States. While some people claim that the national debt is caused by the falling economy, most maintain that the debt itself causes the poor economy (Budget Deficits 2007). Rising debt leads to higher interest and investment rates, and cuts into our national savings. Ignoring the national debt leaves the major burden of paying it off to later generations, while meanwhile allowing our country’s economy to further drop and our dependency on other nations to rise.
Throughout the movie, Michael Moore wants the audience to feel the emotion that he, as the director, has put into the film. Michael Moore puts his life work into this movie because this, for him, was not just a new movie subject, this affected his family directly. His father lost his job at an assembly line after thirty-seven loyal years of service because the company thought they could make more money cutting the workers. He has spent countless hours and years on the film because he was able to see that the economy was self destructing with greed. Moore uses Aristotle’s persuasive appeals to show the corruption throughout America that has come from a capitalistic economy.
Also millionaires spend more time than the average American of financial research and maintaining their finances. The example of the North’s and the South’s are a good example of a good and bad budgeting example. The North’s were more frugal and strict with budgeting than the South’s. North’s live well below their means, buys used vehicles, and places a big deal on budgeting. In contrast the South’s have no control on their spending and no budget.
Deficit spending happens when a government grows its debt, meaning that its spending is greater than its income. (Deficit Spending, 2008) Deficit spending is a fiscal policy, that when used appropriately can do some amazing things, like pull the United States up from its bootstraps effectively ending The Great Depression. President Hoover increased government spending by 50% and used the money to fund public works and infrastructure projects from 1928 to 1932. (Deficit Spending, 2008)
The U.S budget deficit over the years has been a problem but lately the deficit has shrunk. However, what made the U.S budget deficit get to where it is today and what will it be like in the years to come. Throughout the past the U.S has operated under a deficit. This means that the U.S Spent more money than it was taking in. The cause of the excess in spending was different depending on which year. Some of the causes were war, increase in spending , and economic downturns. There were different acts passed to try and control the deficit problem. The deficit at the present time is declining. This decline is due to the improving economy, sequester, and a tax increase on high-income households. The big factor that went into the decline in the deficit for 2013 was the payment that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac made. The deficit decline in the present time may make some think the U.S could get out of debt but it has been projected that the U.S deficit will start to increase once again.
One major one that sticks out is discrimination. That was by far the most influential social problem in the movie. Everything revolved around discrimination in the movie. Not only was the main character a minority, due to his skin color, he was also mentally disabled. The opening scene is of him walking down the street in his down, and everyone veers away from him with looks of disgust. He never harmed anyone, ever, but people saw him as different, and therefore threatening. Also, later on in the movie, Radio was discriminated against by a new, local cop. It was Christmas time in the movie, and Radio had received many, many gifts from townspeople.
