Its as if horse riding runs through my family’s blood. My grandmother rode horses, my mother rode horses, and she eventually passed that love to me. Growing up hearing about all the amazing things my mom had done with this sport made me want to go out and experience it myself. From a young age my mom encouraged me to love horses, but she never really had to. I had a love for these gentle giants all on my own. We have a picture of me when i was two years old, hanging on our fridge. In the picture i am feeding the horse a carrot out of my hand. Connecting with your horse, right posture, always thinking a step ahead and making sure you and your horse are safe, are just a few things you have to conquer to ride horses. Many people don’t see riding as a sport, but like football or soccer, you have to condition yourself for the challenges that may arise. These challenges made me into a stronger person mentally and physically. It taught me strength out on the course and in every other aspect of my life. Although riding taught much about patience, independence and hard work, that is not the reason i so love this sport. I love riding because I could always count on the barn to make me feel at home, or my horse to be there when id had a bad day. The feeling of two individuals becoming one, so beautifully matched, that it is impossible to tell where rider ends and horse begins. When others think about riding, they may not see it as a sport, but they also don’t see the love a rider has for their horse. For me, riding comfortated me in a tough time with my family. Once you get them to settle down and get there mind focused on just walking and the rider then you know the bond with the rider and horse are strong. When it is time for the second run of the night you want to warm them up again but not as hard this time because he or she has already been warmed up once before this, so just a little warming up won’t hurt. When it is that time for the second run the rider will bring the horse him a set him or her up for their first barrel and make the most of the race. If you see the rider smiling then everyone knows she has done her job with this horse. The rider can make an automatic barrel horse where that horse know his job and she barely has to ask the horse for a turn or touch his face to go around that barrel. When the rider gets a horse to be like that everyone can tell they spent hours and days together. The rider worked with that horse but never made him sour or hate coming into the arena. They spent time working on flexing the horse and making sure he knew when to tuck his nose and leave it for an extra second. They will all see when they are running home how much they spend time they spend together if they are fast and smooth through the pattern and don’t have any blow ups before or after coming in and out of the arena. When riding a horse you don’t just sit there and do nothing, You work hard to control a 800-1000 pound animal. You have to push your horse and yourself to the greatest you can be. It is a lot of work, it is just like any other sport. You have to go ride your horse at least 4 times a week, you practice in the wind, rain, snow, when it’s hot out, and event when it is freezing cold.
As tourists wander the trails of Mesa Verde National Park they might see wild horse and elk competing for the same water source. Wild horses from the nearby Ute Mountain Ute Reserve wander into Mesa Verde on a daily basis. The horses have been around since the opening of the park in 1906, but with recent water shortages from drought, there is not enough water to fulfill the needs of all the animals in the park. Since the horses are considered trespassing, the National Park Service and The Bureau of Land Management are trying to find a way to keep the horses away from the park. The wild horses of Mesa Verde National Park deserve to live in the park even though the horses have caused some complications within Mesa Verde, and the National Park Service needs to provide better management services for the horses.
Grand champion! I was riding Fancy, a paint horse, at the Dallas County Fair in the Horsemanship class. In this class, I had to complete a pattern and it was judged on how well each horse and rider completed the pattern. The judge felt that Fancy and I performed best and awarded me with a big purple ribbon and a trophy with a horse on top. At the end of the fair, all of the grand champions were announced before the races. That was the final reward for successfully showing a horse in competitions.

In conclusion, horses mean more to me than many other things. They are part of my friends and family, but I also have great respect for them.
