These two figures have played a monumental role in the Civil Rights era. Without them the luxuries that African Americans enjoy would not be so if this three men did not speak and call for improvement of the treatment of Blacks in America. Dr Martin L. King and Malcolm X are names to remember but not only is their name worth memorization but likewise their speeches are ones to remember. The two major speeches given by these men are entitled “I have a Dream” given by Dr. King, and “The ballot or the bullet” given by Malcolm X. All two of these speeches show off the different approaches that the individuals took to and what improvement looked like. The theoretical framework i would like to examine these two speeches is Aristotle's ethos, pathos, and logos. Pathos meaning feelings, logos appealing to the logic and ethos appealing to the ethics of the individual. All three are displayed in their speeches. They had to use these frameworks to persuade the audience to understand their desire to have the right to vote. When Malcolm X opens his speech he is immediately exclusive by acknowledging whites as “enemies” which is a very tough tone to start his speech off with. Dr. King opens his speech with a more inclusively tone by using language such as “friends” and “dignity of man”. Malcolm x uses a tough tone due to his belief of how improvement looked for Black Americans which was a exclusion of White Americans. MLK and improvement looked more inclusive of all races. Since they had different beliefs of how improvement looked for Black people they used different tones to get their point
