I finally have the power! After a semester of taking a course about hiding glossophobia as best as I can, while juggling critical thinking and persuasion skills in a public speaking setting. I have finally been given the power to judge others, who have set out on the path of becoming a great public speaker, on how well they can hide their own fear of public speaking. Countless minutes have I spent throughout the semester looking for a good speaker to write my critique paper on; someone interesting, speaking about an interesting topic. Someone I deemed the perfect victim of my judgement! In the end I found no one was actually worthy, and I had to resort to the speech intramurals at DVC (also the extra credit was very enticing). It was obvious that a lot of the speakers were there purely for the extra credit but some of the speeches were actually pretty impressive. Aside from Jason there were a couple other students who were great public speakers at the intramurals whom I greatly considered using as the subjects of my critical essay. There was a common trend of public speaking mistakes I noticed, the worst one being the usage of, “hi, my name is so-and-so”, as an attention getter and ending with, “thank you for listening”, as a conclusion. Aside from that, there were a lot of biased and bad sources cited throughout the event and a lot of the speakers would apologize after stumbling in their words, some spoke like robots, some made sure we all knew that there was no flipping way they would be wasting their Friday at that event if they weren’t failing their course, one of them even had the audacity to read his speech from his phone. I even got to watch an exchange student talk about how bad America sucks and why we should take a semester to study in another country to learn about how much better other cultures are compared to ours (Aristotle’s rhetorical triangle must not have been part of his current COMM course’s curriculum). One of my greatest strengths pertaining to education is my ability to complete my work in a timely matter. I only turned in late work at least two times in my high school career. Another strength I possess is being a respectful, erudite student. I can understand the lessons quickly and listen to my teacher in a considerate manner. Although one can discuss their strengths indefinitely, weaknesses must be told to understand a person. One of my main shortcomings is public speaking. The debate team of Wiley College faced many colleges to be recognized and finally in the end winning a debate against the reigning debating champions, Harvard University. One of the debaters who caught my attention was James Farmer Jr., the youngest on the team that started out as an alternative. James Farmer sought recognition from adults and wanted to show everyone he was capable of debating. James Farmer incorporates a lot of Ethos and Pathos into his speech making, allowing him to leave his audience filled with emotions and in awe. Although James Farmer interested me, especially the way he presented his final speech, James Farmer and I are very different in the way we deliver our speeches.
The outside speaker that I saw took place on Monday November eleventh two thousand and thirteen, in the Saint Ignatius Science Center room one hundred and fifteen. The speaker of this presentation was Tom McDonnell elected CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Throughout McDonnell’s speech he talked about his experience attending Rockhurst University when it was an all boys school and his life after he graduated form Rockhurst and started his career. I thought that the speech was very well organized because I would assume that he made very good valid points, and when I say assume, I will elaborate on that more later on in my paper. It seemed that there was a clear introduction and body, but I was kind of surprised with the conclusion because he seemed to have just ended his speech. Or it might have been that his conclusion was so long that I just assumed to be part of the body.
On February 2, 2002, Dr. Jane Goodall appeared at Clemson University to speak to the students and public. I will attempt to evaluate her performance as a public speaker. Specifically, I will begin by describing the setting and audience for the event. I will then identify the ways in which Dr. Goodall would be described as an effective public speaker in the context of the textbook, Excellence in Public Speaking. I will then analyze the aspects of her performance that the textbook might have considered lacking. Finally, I will devote a few words to my personal opinion of the effectiveness of Dr. Goodall’s presentation.
Judge Kilgallen, in my opinion was one of the best speakers to come in to the class. I think this because she is not supposed to be biased by the political parties, on the account that she is a judge. This leading to fair trails in the cases she presides over and unbiased opinions upon matters. In addition, she provided by-partisan views that really helped the class further understand the political system. Few people are fearless speakers. As students, we generally feel the rumble of butterflies in our stomachs, but the most we have to lose is a good grade.
I would like to open with a quote from Charles Swindoll. It reads, “life is 10% of what happens and 90% of how you react to it.” I am a firm believer of this statement because there will always be things out of your control, but your reaction will always be up to you. As for the positive experiences, those are the ones you cherish most, but the negatives are what teach you the most. After listening to my speech, I want you to understand how both the positive and negative experiences in my life have benefitted me. I was able to develop significant skills and relationships through the major events in my life.
Due to this course, I have realized that public speaking anxiety is very common phenomenon that probably every speaker will have, no matter he/she is an expert speaker or a green hand. This recognition did relax my nervous and apprehension, and that leaded to a better performance. Before the speech of persuade, I attempted to reduce the public speaking anxiety and improved eye contact by doing more rehearsals. fortunately, that worked and helped me a lot.
I found O’ Brien’s speech to be extremely educational as well as entertaining. He used his profession as a comedian to incorporate pathos (humor), which positively affected the graduates. “When I got the call two months ago to be your speaker, I decided to prepare with the same intensity many of you have devoted to an important term paper. So late last night, I began (O’Brien, 2011)”. O’Brien is making a joke, based on the common stereotype that college students procrastinate on papers till the day before the deadline. “Behind me sits a highly admired President of the United States and decorated war hero while I, a cable television talk show host, have been chosen to stand here and impart wisdom. I pray I never witness a more damning example of what is wrong with America today (O’Brien, 2011).” O’Brien regularly uses humbling humor that supports the delivery of his speech. O’ Brien portrays himself as humble because he feels as if he isn’t worthy of giving a commencement speech due former president Bush, a decorated war hero was sitting behind him. O’Brien seems puzzled that they choose a television comedian, over a president and war hero because he is arguably much more qualified and respected. Making a successful public presentation or speech to an audience was a very big task for me before I joined the public speaking class. I was always frightened and very nervous. Since then I now understand the process of making a speech or a presentation including coming up with a topic and from this topic develop the main points of the speech, research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make a magnificent presentation to any audience. People in the audience might sometimes agree or disagree with my opinion or points, it was therefore necessary to communicate my information clearly to the audience without making any judgments since every person was entitled to a different opinion and views about things.
Public speaking is one of the most under rated skills learned in school, yet is one of the most valuable. The way you communicate shows a lot about you, and can influence other’s opinions of you. In every profession communicatiis important. Good communication skills, no matter what you plan to do in life, will help you out greatly and improve your chances against a harsh job market. I am majoring in Business Administration and Law, and communication is one of the biggest parts of business and law, yet communication is hardly ever taught in business classes for my major. I think that a communications class like public speaking, for example, should be not just for a college class, but taught in high school and middle school as well. I believe several classes would allow anyone to become an expert speaking. The only way to fully learn public speaking is to get up in front of people and talk to them. One can not learn public speaking from a book.
As in all aspects of personal and professional life, having effective communication is a key element of success. Effective communication can benefit your relationships with people. By conveying your message and integrating them as a member of the team and not just a subordinate leads to better production. By effectively communicating you can clearly define job responsibilities and expectations. The better you are able to communicate the less likely organizational turnover of personnel will occur. Supervisors and leaders in the professional workplace find that the most important factor in advancement and retain ability is effective communication. Senior level executives and human resources managers are stressing the importance of communication and providing more training for mid-level management. Emphasis is placed on communication being clear by being transmitted strongly.
Self-awareness is not about reading a book or attending a course. Self-awareness is a journey, and it takes practice. It’s like a muscle that becomes more effective with time and effort. It gives us mental strength as opposed to physical strength. We are constantly changing and adapting to the multiple external forces around us and to our individual experiences. The more we learn to be aware of, and understand, our reactions, thoughts, and emotions, while also keeping in mind our values, the more we can become the best we can be and the more successful we can become.
