Emily Dickinson once wrote, “Hope is a thing with feathers / That perches in the soul, / And sings the tune without words / And never stops at all.” She was right; when all the world is filled with despair, sadness, and longing, all we have left is hope. Hope is the promise of sun on a cold winter’s night. It’s the hug of comfort for a broken heart. It lifts you up off the ground and vows that better times will come. It’s the light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. It follows as you roam and whispers in your ear of greatness. Anything in the world is possible with hope behind you, you just have to believe.

I received more letters. My mother added to the pile. I ignored said pile. At the beginning of summer, the pile had morphed into an enormous mound of papers which took up almost half of my desk and I could not ignore it any longer. When I decided to peak at the top layer, I was shocked to discover that everything was addressed to one ‘Helia M. Gagnon,’ or in other words, me. I looked through brochure after brochure and could not believe how many colleges had contacted me about my future. It did not matter to me, though, for I was going to UW-Oshkosh, or so I thought. I had not even dared to dream of such an achievement. Hope engulfed the cracks in my facade of satisfaction and whispered in my ear that, just perhaps, Yale would see the potential in a shy girl from Wisconsin, just as my coaches saw my potential on the court. With much struggle and worry, I finished my application and sent it in the very last day. The results won’t arrive until April, but hope sings to me every day.
