In my opinion, the degree of severity of the disability determines if a person with a severe disability can raise a normal child. Depending on the type of disability, the disability impacts each person differently. Some examples of common disabilities are vision impaired, deaf or hard of hearing, mental health conditions, intellectual disability, acquired brain injuries, autism spectrum disorder, speech and language disorder and physical disability. Although this is a list of general disabilities, several of these disabilities can be severe which automatically prohibits the person with the disabilities to raise a child. According to the movie, Sam was on the autism spectrum and was mentally challenged. Initially, Sam did not understand the concept of taking care of a child. However, through support and guidance from his friends, he was able to be an effective parent to his daughter, Lucy. Without the support of Lucy’s foster mother, and his friends, Sam would not have been able to raise Lucy. I was worried watching Sam parent Lucy independently due to Lucy purposely depriving herself from learning. Also, she felt embarrassed that her only parent was different from the other fathers. As a result, her attitude and behavior towards her father altered. From a school counselor perspective, I was concerned about Lucy’s development and would have referred the family to outside services for support. At the same time, it was heart breaking to observe a child taken away from their parent, especially a parent they love dearly. A parent is a parent, whether they have a severe disability or not. Removing a child from their parent care by force will be painful to any parent.
