My family and I have been working all day, which is not something a teenager is eager to do on a Friday. I usually start my Fridays off by attending high school, then spending the rest of the evening at the tennis courts with some friends. However, today is not a normal Friday, Hurricane Harvey is predicted to hit my city, Houston, in no time. My family and I, consisting of my Mom, Dad, and younger brother Bryan have been preparing our house to resist the storm. My Mom made my brother and I stay home from school which is understandable after watching the news. Harvey was categorized as a level four hurricane with winds up to 130 mph so we needed to begin precautions as soon as possible. As my brother and I were setting up the generator Dad was making fast work of the trees outside with his chainsaw. He had been worried about the loose limbs and them potentially breaking a window. I decided to give Dad a hand but before long I heard a shout, “Bradley!”. It was Mom, and I go by Brad so when she calls me by Bradley I know she is serious. She had the news on as she was packing our just-in-case bags which had everything you needed from a toothbrush and toothpaste to a lighter and flashlight. She even threw in an extra pair of my socks, you know just mom things. “The storm is expected to arrive in less than 30 minutes”, she said “tell Dad to hurry and get inside.” So as every good child would do I told my Dad it was time to come inside, he agreed as we could see the storm coming in the distance. Hurricane Harvey was massive, the biggest I have ever seen and hopefully the biggest I will ever see. We returned to the living room to find Bryan and Mom with Shasta, our pet dog. Hurricane Harvey was one of the most devastating hurricanes to strike the United States in several years. Harvey resulted in over eighty fatalities and over 150 billion dollars in damages. This proves to be one of the most destructive hurricanes to be recorded. The overwhelming damage was caused by many different aspects; however, three of the greatest aspects are: varying weather patterns throughout the storm, the city structure of Houston, Texas, and the lack of evacuation. Each of these factors affected the city in a different way, but all resulted in a common outcome, devastation.
Thunder rolled intensely outside, my aunt, mother, sister and I were sat calmly in the basement. We had been through this many times before; I mean afterall, Kansas was part of Tornado Alley. 2. My sister and I were young when this happened, her probably four or five, me about eight. 3. Before we had even started driving to my aunt’s house; since she’s the only one with a basement; my sister and I were complaining about being hungry. 4. Mom said she would get us something to eat soon, but then the sirens started blaring. 5. She called my aunt and told her we would be over in about ten minutes. 6. Me and my sister continued to complain about being hungry because, we always had to get what we wanted. 7. So my mom stopped at McDonald’s and got us some food. 8. After we were almost five minutes later than we said we would be my aunt panicked. 9. Jenny, my aunt, was calling like crazy. 10. When we finally got to her house she lectured my mom about how it wasn’t safe to have us out there like that with a tornado in the area. 11.Afterwards, we all sat on the porch and watched the storm. 12. That’s my favorite memory with my family, and it’s one I’ll never forget.

The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 was the biggest natural disaster in American history. When it came there was little warning and once the citizens were warned it was too late to leave. The waves and rain from the hurricane flooded the whole city over fifteen feet high with water. During the storm people experienced many events that would change their lives. Everyone who survived this hurricane had a story, a story that could be tragic, happy, or full of stress. Once the storm was over there was an immense amount of debris that needed to be cleaned up. The people of Galveston had to look for bodies and people who were buried alive. Galveston had to rebuild everything and start all over. The people living there came up with an idea to build a seawall that would protect Galveston from large waves created by another hurricane. They then also raised the city by as much as 17 feet in some areas.

Many promises have been made when it comes to the rebuilding of the city. People did many things to prepare for Hurricane Sandy. Many people who lived on or near the coastline were given evacuation orders by government officials. These areas were likely to experience severe flooding. The people who lived in low elevations along the coast were particularly in danger. These people left their homes in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut; some were fortunate enough to find a hotel to stay in or relatives to stay with. Others who weren’t as fortunate waited in community shelters. Organizations such as the American Red Cross opened shelters specifically for people who had to leave their homes because of Hurricane Sandy.

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina brought about significant social, political, and economic shifts in New Orleans, especially for certain underprivileged groups. I will be discussing how two papers—“Why Katrina's Victims Aren't Refugees: Musings on a ‘Dirty’ Word” by Adeline Masquelier and “Who Dat?: Race and Its Conspicuous Consumption in Post-Katrina New Orleans” by Marc D. Perry—both deal with these developments. More specifically, I will discuss how they each examine the concept of “otherness” in New Orleans within the context of Hurricane Katrina. These two articles are similar in that they both delineate certain groups in New Orleans that are considered “other” by those in power (and are essentially talking about the same group), and describe similar ways in how the “other” are dealt with; they are different in that Perry’s article focuses on the changes post-Katrina, while Masquelier’s article uses Katrina to show how previous institutions were amplified.

After he had sat with her, he got up and walked away to stand near the door.
