Human traffickers often target women who live in economically deprived areas where means of fiscal provision is limited. These women are often lured into human trafficking of false pretenses, including lucrative job opportunities. Many women are rescued from human trafficking only to find themselves back in the same situation when they are not able to provide for themselves once they are rescued. In order to alleviate this problem, I proposed that human trafficking shelters and aftercare facilities institute a technical skills training programs to secure jobs that are in demand within the local economy.

Critical theory is used to identify structures of oppression within society and is also used to identify where changes must occur to assist in alleviating that oppression. The critical theory applies components such as critical thinking, and self-empowerment to promote action-oriented change that not only impacts individuals but also impacts societies. This program model utilizes critical theory by identifying the oppression and social injustice that victims of human trafficking are exposed to. Many impoverished people who are already oppressed by poverty are susceptible to human trafficking and are targeted due to lack of financial resources. This curriculum in this program aims to utilize critical theory and create change by bringing awareness to participants of how their social structure and their own position in society inherently puts them at risk. In addition, this program provides a way to change one own social standing by empowering participants to take ownership over their own lives and learn a skill that can assist them in changing their economic position within society. If participants become empowered to create their own change for their own lives, they will break the cycle of extreme poverty within their own community and break the pattern of susceptibility to human trafficking.
