The author’s diction for this passage consists of short sentences with a very choppy rhythm that interrupts the thought process. Twain uses this method to generate a suspenseful mood and increase the intensity of the situation. The raft breaking loose symbolizes the tension of the moment, and just how quickly Huck and Jim’s adventure can turn into a disaster. Ending this chapter so abruptly where the characters are at a standstill in their situation, leaves both the reader and the plot on a cliff hanger.
