Death in books are absolutely horrible, especially when it’s your favorite character. It rips your heart and soul out of you, in simple terms: It destroys you. After that death, you are left to wonder why the author decided to such a horrible thing and you start ask yourself: What does this mean? and How is this going to affect the novel? In the educational text, How to Read Literature Like A Professor, Foster analyzes how violence and symbols affect novels. Foster states that literature is there to make sense of the outside world, even the cruel and senseless things that go on. However, not all sacrifices are deaths, as seen in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. In both stories, upon analysis and comparison, one can see the similarities and differences involving the theme of sacrifice. When the two stories are put side by side, one will see that Connell and Hurst both use death in a way that displays character development. Literature is a word used to describe written or spoken material. Literature educates, informs, entertains and influences the reader or listener in a myriad of profound ways. Broadly speaking, “literature” is used to describe anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to works of the creative imagination. Writers can change one’s beliefs, thoughts, actions, indeed their entire lives. In Northrop Frye’s The Educated Imagination, Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird and Plato’s The Republic, the writers use literature to utter the importance literature bestows on society. The three writers state their opinions using different methods to prove to the readers that their opinions are valid. Since each author has a unique writing style, most envision their writing with a relatable figure. Some would argue that Frye’s writing style is much like that of a textbook, very instructional and factual, Lamott reminded them of a conversation with a friend and that Plato’s writing style is very informative, akin to a professor carrying on a dialogue with an inquisitive student.

What might be Poe’s greatest fictitious stories are gothic tend to have the same recurring theme of either death, lost love, or both. His choice of word draws the reader in to engage them to understand the author’s message more clearly. Authors who have a vague short lexicon tend to not engage the reader as much.

Readers of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet may well debate the effectiveness of or purpose for which the author uses death imagery. Shakespeare’s primary function of death imagery is to emphasize the theme of untimely and tragic deaths, specifically for the main characters. First, when Romeo is explaining his love to Friar Laurence, death imagery is used to explain his young age, which makes his death untimely. Furthermore, death imagery conveys the message of violent deaths when Romeo believes false information regarding Juliet’s death. Most importantly, the death of Juliet is described with the use of death imagery to show its untimeliness.

New Criticism portrays how a work is unified, Reader-Response Criticism establishes how the reader reacts to a work, Deconstructive Criticism demonstrates how a work falls apart, Historical Criticism illustrates how the history of the author and the author’s time period influence a text, and last of all, Psychological Criticism expresses how unconscious motivations drive the author in the creation of their work as well as how the reader’s motivations influence their own interpretation of the text (Lynn 139, 191). This creates a deep level of understanding of literature that simply cannot be gained through surface level reading. If not one criticism is beneficial to the reader, then taking all criticisms or a mixture of specific criticisms into consideration might be the best way to approach literary

The reader can learn about the author through literary elements such as symbolism, diction, and structure. A good example of this is Robert Frost’s poems The Road Not Taken and Nothing Gold can Stay in which he uses ordinary language unlike many other poets that became more experimental (Frost, Robert. “1.”).
