World war 1 or known by most people the Great War was one of the biggest wars in history and really impacted this world and change the course of our lives forever. World war 1 could have been avoided but we were exposed to the creation of alliances, nationalism and for many countries the thirst of militarism made the war begin and not end for a great amount of time. If we could have prevented these things and not let them affect our decisions the war would/could have never started. One thing that could have helped prevent the war was if the creation of alliances were never created. An alliance is when you are supportive/associated with another country and you support them when they need your help. Nationalism gave people pride for there country and they thrived for there country to become a world power. Germany was a major believer in nationalism because they wanted to become a major world power. Germany wanted to become a world power so bad but they needed to find a way in accomplishing it. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1896. He was a threat to the Black Hand Terrorist group, a group of radical Serbian nationalists. They pledged “to destabilize the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire in order to incorporate their Serb population into a greater Serbia” (CITE) However the Archduke’s goals were “strengthening the Austro-Hungarian Empire” (CITE) which was contrary to the Serbs' desires. They feared that if he came into power, he would continue to persecute the Serbs, henceforth the decision to assassinate him.

The people of Austria were rightfully upset in the summer of 1914. Archduke Franz Ferdinand had been shot and killed on June 28th, supposedly by a Serbian, and the Austrian government was livid. Three weeks after the assassination, on July 21st, Austria’s ambassador to Serbia, Baron von Giesl, wrote to foreign minister Leopold von Berchtold expressing that Serbia could no longer be avoided. Serbia had been seen as a threat long before the assassination, but now things seemed to have gotten out of hand. Giesl used his fears and beliefs to form an opinion that, in his opinion, should represent the entity of Austrian officials and influence the country to wage war on Serbia.

The Great War, also known as World War 1, was one of the deadliest wars that essentially started because of ideologies, small problems that were blown out of proportions because of alliances with other countries which cause catastrophic results worldwide. The United States was part of this conflict, not because of free will, but because none of the European superpowers wanted to respect the fact that the United States was neutral and providing support to both sides of war.
Extreme nationalism was one of the causes of World War I because of the unification of Germany and Italy. Nationalism led European nations to compete for the largest army and navy, or the greatest industrial development. It also gave groups of subject peoples the idea of forming independent nations of their own. Germany wanted to match the British navy superiority during the reign of Kaiser William II. The nationalistic Italians who had just unified were also willing to fight alongside the Germans in order to prove themselves. Serbian nationalists however, were directly involved with the cause of WW I. On June 28, 1914, the young Princip assassinated Archduke Francis Ferdinand and thus brought about the ultimatum of Austria-Hungary. Encouraged by the ‘brotherhood’, the Germans willingly watched over its brother and fortified the Anshluss, another case of nationalism. The entanglement of alliances would bring about the war.
Alliances were the reason that so many countries were involved in the war, and why it escalated into a global event. For instance, one of the key events that sparked the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Gavrilo Princip, a member of the group called The Black Hand, killed Ferdinand and his wife in hopes to make Serbia independent from Austria-Hungary. Basically, Austria-Hungary wanted Serbia to punish the people responsible for the assassination and Serbia refused, so Austria-Hungary declared war on them. Since Serbia was an ally to Allied powers and Austria-Hungary was an ally to the Central Powers, this single event set off a chain reaction that resulted in all the countries associated with these major powers being involved in the conflict. A single country going into battle can drag the rest of its allies with it, and with so many alliances a small event can spread into a full scale fight, such as the World Wars.

Romanticism was another huge impact of Nationalism, with many changes that was made from artist and how their paintings became more realistic and how everyone had different views on artist’s painting.
World War 1 was called “The Great War”, “The war to end all wars”, and “The first modern war”. It had many causes and a few repercussions and I will describe them in detail.
In my opinion I do not believe World War I could have been avoided because of the situation the nations had created and events leading up to the war. First off the alliance system caused many problems. It created secrecy between nations and forced nations to go to war. Nations couldn't leave alliances which meant if one nation in the alliance made a bad decision the others had to go in on it. Countries turned on each other. Because of alliances many nations grew suspicious of each other and trust between them was lost.
Although the alliance system was a main cause of the First World War, it arose because of several other factors, and did not cause the war single handedly. Nationalism, the love and support of one's country, has always existed. In this era, however, it was to take part in the creation of one of the most famous wars in history. Since so much pride was devoted to countries, it made the possibilities of peace between past rivals less probable. It also meant that most nations, especially the great powers, would rather fight a war than back down from a rival's diplomatic provocation.
The Alliances not only contributed to war breaking out; it made the war last longer and become on a much larger scale; major political disputes would inevitably cause a large conflict. The alliances caused suspicion, fear, and tension among nations. The two camps were the Triple Entente (Britain, France and Russia) and the Triple Alliance (Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary). When countries formed alliances with each other it gave them protection, if a country was threatened or under attack then the alliance would come to that country’s aid. Countries made an alliance when they both needed protection from a stronger country.
