How Teddy Roosevelt Saved Football
“Of those slaughtered, eleven were high school players, ten were immature boys of 17 and under. Three presumably hardened, seasoned, and presumably fit college men were slain today.” In 1905, this was part of a telegram sent to President Roosevelt alerting him to the seriousness of the injuries involved in football. During this meeting they met to decide the set ways to make college football safer for the players. The first change they made to the game was the legalization of the forward pass. This was the change that revolutionized the sport of American football. The forward pass meant that teams could design plays for running or passing which would help decrease injuries significantly. Also they designed penalties and downs. The penalties meant if players did not abide to the rules they would lose yardage for their team. The downs meant that the teams had four plays to get 10 yards or the ball would be turned over to the other team. (Hornet Football) The NCAA calmed all movements to ban football and people were satisfied with the changes made. The efforts of Roosevelt had helped to save America’s sport of football. Teddy Roosevelt’s idea for football helped change the sport for the best and also helped it to grow into a very popular and safer game. As the NCAA grew they made more rules to further improve on Roosevelt's original ideas for the game.

Are young children putting their health and even their lives at risk if they partake in the sport of football? Some claim that the American sport is far too dangerous and the risk of concussions and injuries far outway the pros of the physical sport, while others insist that technological improvements and new regulations have made the sport safer. Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor of history and education at New York University, argues in his paper, “We Must Stop Risking the Health of Young Football Players,” that football is a sport that is too dangerous for the youth. He states his belief that technological improvements in helmets and changes in the rules of the sport have had little effect on reducing injuries and that nothing has worked.

American Football is a huge spectator sport where offensive and defensive players will use teamwork and perseverance to try and score more points than their opponent. Football is highly respected in America, where boys will try and pursue the dream of playing in the NFL (National Football Association) someday; but if you look at an average neighborhood, you will find that kids and adults of all ages love to go out and throw around the pigskin. (Lerner and Lerner 275). One thing Americans will take pride in is the college and NFL football teams they root for. People sit down with a beer and talk hours upon hours of football and two individuals can get in a heated discussion in the local sports store of whose sports team is better. Surprisingly enough, one will find the most passionate football players at the high school level. Most boys will start their football career as a young child in football programs such as Pop Warner to get a foothold and to get those involved in teamwork and friendships. These programs are usually the start to someone falling in love with the sport and making it a career choice eight years later. Football is one of America’s favorite sports. When fall season comes around, people across America are placing bets, finding out where that new sports bar is, and buying wide screen T.V’s to watch NFL on Sundays. After their team plays, they will go out and reminisce what happened that Sunday. While thousands of fans are still pumped from the NFL games they watched; small towns across America are getting ready to shut down their shops and restaurants to have the chance to make it to the local high schools football game. Ray Glier, a reporter for the New York Times, writes about football in the small town of Appala...

He didn’t play video games he either played with the kids or watched tv and worked out. “One player said when they went to Duke one time Manning played a joke and said everyone's food was on Eric and he got mad but laughed at the same time” (Glavic). 509 career touchdowns against San Francisco is good, but he had to make his own jokes. “There was one time when JJ Watt put a big hit on Peyton and he got back up and a play later he told me you got me pretty good Peyton was always a good sport and always tried to set records”
Football is the game of the people; it has surpassed baseball to become “America’s pastime”. Anyone who has a family member or friend is the sport should be proud to say they know someone who plays football, and even though pride is what fuels the love of the game, many people are not aware of the consequences that come with playing football. The first vestiges of what would become American football are found in the 19th century in the games played by students at the elite schools and universities of the United States. A particularly violent running game was played at Princeton University circa 1820, and around this time a kicking game was also being played by students of Dartmouth College. Rules for the Dartmouth game, known as “Old Division Football”, were published in 1871. The first running game to codify its rules was the popular English sport, rugby, and it did so in 1845 (“A Brief History of Football” para.2). Today the NFL has the highest attendance of any other sport in America. Over the years it has grown to astronomical proportions and keeps growing every day. According to the Encyclopedia of International Sports Studies, the overall annual attendance increased from three million at the beginning of former Commissioners Pete Roselle’s term 1960, to seventeen million by the end of his tenure in 1989, and 400 million viewers watched 1989’s Super Bowl XXIII (pp. 932–933). Crazy right? Yes, I thought so to. But, if it wasn’t for Pete, I really do not think the NFL would be as popular today.
