The novel Soraya the storyteller written by Rosanne Hawke is about a young Afghanistan girl who immigrated to Australia with her family and the difficulties that she faces along the way.This book shows us how her country is displaced because of the Taliban and has lost four individual from her family on the off chance that she loses more, this affected her life.In this story, Soraya and her family have been marginalised in certain ways, like Racism, Culture and more throughout the story.Marginalisation is when a person or a group of people is treated differently comparing others in a negative way or as inconsequential.To give detail Soraya been marginalised since the beginning of the first day of school, this demonstrate to us how important this issue is. The narrator and her husband’s interactions shows her as submissive in terms of gender equality. Although John perceives the narrator as a child with no volunteer ideas, it is shown in her journal that this theory is not valid because she was shaped to comply by the society and the norm. Travesties are committed against women every day, in every country, in every city, town and home. In Afghanistan women are not only discriminated against, they are publicly reduced to animals. Women are deprived of basic human rights: they are not allowed to travel outside their homes without being completely covered by the traditional shroud-like burqa; they are not allowed to speak or walk loudly in public; they are not allowed to laugh or speak with other women; they are not allowed to attend school nor work; they are expected to be invisible; they are the ghosts of what were once educated, notable, and successful women. With their ruthless and extreme laws, the Taliban have effectively removed the physical presence of women in Afghanistan. The Taliban have stolen the very souls of these women and have turned them into the “living dead” of Afghanistan. The Taliban’s harsh restrictions and extreme religious laws have tainted the freedoms and basic human rights of the once valued and prominent women of Afghanistan.

A system of oppression is defined as intuitions that describe what is the norm in society. Such behavior is used to maintain an imbalance of power within the community being oppressed. When oppression occurs in a region, there is said to be four roles within the oppressed community. Those who are members of the group exploiting people, or victims, are the oppressors. Among the victims are upstanders and bystanders. Both An Invisible Woman by Bharati Mukherjee and Mother Tongue by Amy Tan, are stories of women who have been held back and controlled by prejudice. In Mukherjee’s essay, she tells the story of herself living in Toronto and what it means to be a visible minority in big cities. Whereas, Tan speaks of her mother’s English, what it means to be a second generation Canadian, and how language and communication can hold people back. Both essays are based off the theme of prejudice, however, they are told from different perspectives and one woman seems content while the other frustrated and trapped.
Margaret Atwood reviles in her book how standardized oppression can easily cause personalized oppression, and how if one accepts oppression they get from being in a society which is oppressive then that person starts to feel internally oppressed.
