hroughout out of our years in school, that we are taught about world history, and how the history book always glorify Christopher Columbus as a hero, or the greatest explorers of all time. However, as I read chapter two of the book “Lies My Teacher Told Me” by James W. Loewen, I was asking myself, whether or not Christopher Columbus should be considered as a hero? Based on the first four chapters of the book “Lies My Teacher Told Me” and my own experience, I have found out how history text books portrayed Christopher Columbus as a role model and turn Helen Keller into ignorance of the student. However, how many students know any inconvenient fact about Christopher Columbus; who Helen Keller was. In the first chapter of the book “Lies My Teacher
This chapter of the book was amazed; it’s the answer whether or not Christopher Columbus should be considered as a hero. Although we all appreciate Columbus’s involvement in finding the New World, and we even named his name as a holiday. However, after reading and experience this chapter, I was faced with some statements about him to make me believe he’s not the role model as portrayed as history textbooks. In addition, I am completely disagreeing to consider Christopher Columbus as a hero. For example, in the chapter 2 of the book, Loewen states that” When Columbus and his men returned to Haiti in 1493, they demanded food, gold, spun cotton-whatever the Natives had that they wanted, including sex with their women. To ensure cooperation, Columbus used punishment by example.” In this passage, it shows that Columbus did not treat the Native American as human beings, it seems like he’s a dictator, and he came here on purposed, to conquer all and steal the riches of the land. What did James wants to say is telling the audience that the people like Christopher Columbus, and Woodrow Wilson are not deserved to be a role model and the history textbooks should not omit and telling all sides about the whole
For me, Ho Chi Minh and Christopher have some in the commons. For example, when I was in Vietnam, my knowledge about this guy is a good leader, a perfect accomplishment leader according to the Vietnamese text book. However, when I get into America and studied the American high school textbooks, I realized that I had been brain-washed for 14 years about Ho Chi Minh. First of all, how the Vietnamese textbook omitted the facts about Ho Chi Minh in the Viet Nam war. He asked the Russia for help, he asked for money, weapons and army to fight against the South Viet Nam- which is supported by the American troops. He also offered the China for help and trading by selling 2 important lands of Viet Nam (Hoang SA, Truong SA) to the China. However, the South Viet Nam did not win due to a perfect plan of Ho Chi Minh. He sent spies into the South army and secondly, too many American troops had fallen down, and so the South Viet Nam had no support and then gets taken over by Ho Chi Minh and turn Viet Nam into a communist country. There are many facts about Ho Chi Minh that are hidden by the Vietnamese text book are “Massacre at Hue 1968”, more than 3,500 Vietnamese people had fallen down in that fight, and “land reform in North Viet Nam 1946-1957” – he sent his army to conquer and
