The members of this said terrorist group, had been influenced by nationalism through policy that had been inflicted on them by the Austrian-Hungarian empire. These were bringing tensions higher and higher until it was almost to the breaking point. Then, bang. Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophia were shot dead in Sarajevo, Bosnia on June 28, 1914. Otto von Bismarck was right when he said, “One day the great European War will come out of some damned foolish thing in the Balkans (goodreads).” Gavrilo Princip was an influential person of the 20th century because of his assassination of Archduke Ferdinand II. This was the catalyst that set off World War I, which indirectly caused the crash of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the formation and destruction of the Weimar Republic, World War II, and the Cold War.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1896. He was a threat to the Black Hand Terrorist group, a group of radical Serbian nationalists. They pledged “to destabilize the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire in order to incorporate their Serb population into a greater Serbia” (CITE) However the Archduke’s goals were “strengthening the Austro-Hungarian Empire” (CITE) which was contrary to the Serbs' desires. They feared that if he came into power, he would continue to persecute the Serbs, henceforth the decision to assassinate him.

This nationalist group targeted Ferdinand due to the feeling amongst Serbians that once appointed to the throne; Ferdinand would uphold the persecution of Serbs inhabiting the borders of the Austro- Hungarian Empire. Gavrilo Princip was one of eight members of the Black Hand chosen to execute Franz Ferdinand. Unloading two shots, Princip had assassinated both Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie. Seized by the police, he was beaten and put into prison, and there he died. The shots of this young man echoed all over the world to initiate the explosion of World War I.

The Philippines is a country with almost 97 million people and is located on the south eastern border of Asia. Before Marco’s presidency, he was involved in other aspects of government. During World War II he served as an officer for the Philippines and was captured by the Japanese but later escaped. When the war was over he was an aide to President Roxas in 1949. He also served in the Senate and the House of Representatives for a number of years. Marcos was a candidate in the 1965 election against Macapagal, who was the former president of the Philippines. Marcos defeated him and this began his twenty years in power as president of the Philippines. He served two terms in office and was the first Philippine president to do so. While in office he tried to improve different aspects of the life in the Philippines like the education system, agriculture, and industries but not do much to end up helping them. Then in 1972 he started martial law in the country. Marcos was accused several times of stealing money from the government but was never actually found guilty of doing so. As Marcos’ time in power continued on, his popularity slowing started to decrease and decrease.
