An important idea in William Shakespeare’s tragedy, ‘Macbeth’ is that even the most nobelest of men can be corrupted by ambition. This idea is worth learning about because it shows how ambition can make a person do terrible things and because it shows how ambition can drive a person crazy.

An important idea presented by Shakespeare is how ambition can corrupt even good people. At the beginning of the play Macbeth was recognised by everyone as a noble hero. After Macbeth completed the war , the people around him described him as “Bellona’s bridegroom”. Bellona is the Greek goddess of war. After Macbeth killed King Duncan he hear a voice that kept saying “Macbeth shall sleep no more!” This shows how macbeth was feeling guilty for what he had done and his conscience was haunting him and his mind. Macbeth also said “Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood Clean from my hand?” This is a metaphor that shows that he felt he could not get rid of the guilt of killing Duncan. The idea that you cannot get rid of the blood means it will drive him crazy because the guilt will always be with him. Also after Macbeth had Banquo killed he saw his ghost at the banquet. When he saw Banquo’s ghost he screamed “Prithee, see there! behold! look! lo! how say you?” But no one else could see the ghost at the banquet which meant that it was actually just an illusion in his head. Through this Shakespeare showed the audience that macbeth was being tortured by his mind which shows how his guilt was driving him even more crazy. These quotes show how Macbeth turned crazy after killing King Ducan along with Banquo , because a person’s conscience is something they cannot escape from.
