A lot has changed from 1880 to 1900 to 2017, we still have many issues from the past that have carried into 2017. We still have corruption throughout our cities, from people losing jobs, or having a job that barely sustains them. In the years from 1860 through 1890, the prospect of a better life attracted nearly ten million immigrants who settled in cities around the United States. The growing number of industries produced demands for thousands of new workers and immigrants were seeking more economic opportunities. Most immigrants settled near each other’s own nationality and/or original village when in America.
During the late 1800's and early 1900's hundreds of thousands of European immigrants migrated to the United States of America. They had aspirations of success, prosperity and their own conception of the American Dream. The majority of the immigrants believed that their lives would completely change for the better and the new world would bring nothing but happiness. Advertisements that appeared in Europe offered a bright future and economic stability to these naive and hopeful people. Jobs with excellent wages and working conditions, prime safety, and other benefits seemed like a chance in a lifetime to these struggling foreigners. Little did these people know that what they would confront would be the complete antithesis of what they dreamed of.

In the eyes of the early American colonists and the founders of the Constitution, the United States was to represent the ideals of acceptance and tolerance to those of all walks of life. When the immigration rush began in the mid-1800's, America proved to be everything but that. The millions of immigrants would soon realize the meaning of hardship and rejection as newcomers, as they attempted to assimilate into American culture. For countless immigrants, the struggle to arrive in America was rivaled only by the struggle to gain acceptance among the existing American population.
In the 1860’s, when the book begins, America is taking in a great deal of immigrants. America did not realize at this time that it was a natural and necessary course that the country was having to go through. The dominant group did not understand why this was having to happen in America because they thought that immigrant would cause a problem in the country. During the 1870’s and 1880’s, there was no feeling of threat posed by the immigrants on Americans that would make them feel like there was going to be a problem in the nation at all. The labor unions had originally allowed only the immigration of contract laborers, but by 1896 the American Federation of Labor had followed Gompers in his aggression to immigration, and American workers continued to stand against free immigration until the restriction movement finally succeeded. Even though Progressives and Socialists had a strong democratic placement, they changed their minds and began to support immigration because they did not want their jobs or lives to be interrupted by excessive immigration. During the years between 1920 and 1960, America saw change in many aspects of life. The United States was a part of two major wars and a crash of the banking system that crippled the economy greater than ever seen in this country’s history. Also the country had new insecurities to tackle such as immigration and poor treatment of workers. These events led to the change of America lives socially, economically, and politically. The people of America changed their ideas of what the country’s place in the world should be. The issues challenging America led the country to change from isolation to war, depression to prosperity, and social change. The threats to American way of life, foreign and domestic, were the changing forces to the country in the twenties to the sixties.
The conflict was expected to arise. In the period between 1877 and 1890, many immigrants had moved in the USA. All of them had a common dream of living a happier life for themselves and their families (Barnes & Bowles, 2014). Conversely, the Americans misunderstood their expectations. During this time, the immigrants were asking for equal rights. However, that become a major topic and it aroused the well-seen conflict.

While women and African Americans worked in growing numbers, much of the huge increase in the labor force in these years came from outside the country, particularly from Europe and Mexico. Between 1901 and 1920, the extraordinarily high total of 14.5 million immigrants entered the country, more than in any previous twenty-year period.
A continuing high birthrate accounted for most of the increase in population, but by the 1840’s the tides of immigration were adding hundreds of thousands more. Before this decade, immigrants had been flowing in at a rate of 60,000 a year ; but suddenly the influx was tripled in the 1840’s and then quadrupled in the 1850’s. During these two feverish decades, over a million and a half Irish, and nearly as many Germans, swarmed down the gang planks. Why did they come? The immigrants came partly because Europe seemed to be running out of room. The population of the Old World more than doubled in the nineteenth century, and Europe began to generate a seething pool of apparently "Surplus" people. They were displaced and footloose in their homelands before they felt the tug of the American magnet. Indeed at least as many people moved about within Europe as crossed the Atlantic. America benefited from these people churning changes but did not set then all in motion. Nor was the United States the sole beneficiary of the process : of the nearly 60 million people who abandoned Europe in the century after 1840, about 25 million went somewhere other than the United States.
Unfortunately, what many discovered, were the same inequalities and prejudices they left behind still existed in the new land. Early in the settling period of America, immigrants were predominantly from Western and Eastern Europe. Those from stronger European nations such as Great Brittan, exerted the dominant force over most others migrating from other countries. Whoever did not conform to the colonial lifestyle and beliefs were welcomed with hostility and discrimination. They were viewed as beneath those who were civilized “The Latter regarded these newcomers contemptuously, labeling them ill-tempered ruffians who drank and fought too much” (Parrillo, 2014: p133). Eastern Europeans migrated in large groups, but struggled with not knowing the English language and therefore were forced into low paying jobs and considered low class as they attempted to assimilate into a foreign culture “The ruling classes and local estate farm owners ruthlessly exploited the common people” (Parrillo, 2014: p151). As people of different ethnicities entered America, they quickly learned that an established culture was already set to the Anglo-Saxon traditions. This created a challenge for those attempting to assimilate into a new country as well as maintain their personal identity. Attempts to merge some cultures that shared similar characteristics were made; however, this seemed necessary more for government bureaucracy rather than an actual merging of people into a unique culture “Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans, separated as they are by culture, history, and to some extent by racial characteristics, they were so combined, with a host of other Spanish speaking groups, into a ‘Hispanic’ category in the census of 1970” (Glazer, 2001: p10).
