My cultural identity is heavily influenced by my family. My family is the biggest factor in shaping my cultural identity. Without them I would be a completely different person. My likes and dislikes, the way I react to things, what I say, what I do, and my overall personality is influenced by my family. My family has influenced my entire personality. My cultural identity would not be the same without the effect they have had on my personality. I’m generally more easy going, but I can be assertive and I work hard to accomplish the things I want. A person’s identity is shaped by cultural experiences that make them into the person they are today. Some of these experiences include someone’s parents, the media, and where they grew up.
Culture, family background and the society in which I live all play a vital part molding the persona of me today. My actions, thoughts and decisions have all been influenced by my environment and the people in which I interact. The main influences that has molded have been the fact that I was born in a Christian household, the Jamaican culture and society and the hardships faced and seen in my lifetime.
Ethnicity significantly influences the formation of an individuals identity and experiences of belonging. Every cultural background has its own guide of morals and values which places expectations on each individual to follow. The various elements of a certain background influence family life and general structure, greatly influencing a persons formation of identity, and ways an individual may experience belonging. Other impacts that may have an effect on ethnicity for various people today include globalisation, increased mobility and migration.
My family is from Mecklenburg County which is located near the southern tip of Virginia and we are of African American descent. Although our family line has some Cherokee Indian in it, we identify most as Black. Being from the south, I was raised with a Baptist based background and learned to always treat people as I would want to be treated regardless of how different they were. As a kid, we attended Sunday School and Worship every Sunday and Bible Study once during the week. When I got older, my family allowed me the opportunity to explore and determine which religion I identified most with, and it still remains as Baptist. My knowledge of my culture goes back as far as my great grandmother who was a mid-wife and delivered all the children in my family and in the community where she lived. My grandfather joined the Navy at a young age and fought in Pearl Harbor dung World War II. After serving our country he returned to Virginia to work as a farmer on our family’s land. He even assisted other local farmers. My grandmother was a housekeeper for most of her young adult life. She became a housewife raising seven kids. My culture identity, as I know it as is African American. My culture can be seen in food, literature, religion, language, the community, family structure, the individual, music, dance, art, and could be summed up as the symbolic level. Symbolic, because faith plays a major role in our daily lives through song, prayer, praise and worship. When I’m happy I rely on my faith, same as when I’m sad, for I know things will get better as they have before.
A person’s identity is shaped by many different aspects. Family, culture, friends, personal interests and surrounding environments are all factors that tend to help shape a person’s identity. Some factors may have more of an influence than others and some may not have any influence at all. As a person grows up in a family, they are influenced by many aspects of their life. Family and culture may influence a person’s sense of responsibilities, ethics and morals, tastes in music, humor and sports, and many other aspects of life. Friends and surrounding environments may influence a person’s taste in clothing, music, speech, and social activities. Personal interests are what truly set individuals apart. An individual is not a puppet on the string of their puppet-master, nor a chess piece on their master’s game board, individuals choose their own paths in life. They accomplish, or strive to accomplish, goals that they have set for themselves throughout their lifetime. Individuals are different from any other individual in the world because they live their own life rather than following a crowd of puppets. A person’s identity is defined by what shaped it in the first place, why they chose to be who they are, and what makes them different from everybody else in the world. I feel that I have developed most of my identity from my own dreams, fantasies, friends, and idols.
They influence my culture because they sometimes change the way I am acting and the respect for them. This is important because family is always a part of your culture and who we are because part of what we know is from family because they are the people we spend most time around with. For example we see our older sibling how they are living their life and their culture is changed as well and there is sometimes when we want to be the same as our older sibling because we like what their doing and that can change a part of our culture.
The main culture that I identify with is centered around my religious affiliation which is Christianity. The cultivation of my spirituality involves many shared rituals which consists of attending church services, partaking in communion (sacrament), reading the bible, baptism, prayer, and much more. These regularly practiced behaviors serve significance in my culture because each activity is done with the intent of being reverent to God. My cultural identity affects my self-concept in that it pulls distinctive aspects such as my self-esteem, mental health, and meaning of life together to produce overall well-being.
When I was in the third grade, my family underwent a dramatic change: my parents decided to adopt a little girl from Guatemala. I did not yet realize the significance of adoption nor the cultural implications - I just knew that I was going to have a sister. About a year later, my parents adopted another girl, this time from South Korea. Since then, five more children have come into our family, making a total of seven adopted siblings (in addition to my biological brother) from countries including Guatemala, South Korea, China, and Ethiopia. My experience in a culturally-diverse family has given me a unique perspective and formed my interest in studying culture and communication.

You spend a great time of your life with family who then influences your identity from the beginning of your life. From the beginning, we are given a set of expectations and values, which are learned from our guardians. We learn not only through these guardians guiding us, but we also learn by life’s examples and observing. As we grow older and mature we more easily understand the importance of values and know what is expected from us. And because we spend a lot of our lives around our family they are the primary influences to social identity, religion, confidence and many more. For example manners are usually taught in households at a young age by guardians, which influences identity positively. Family also influences good things like professionalism and confidence which will come in hand later on in
The influences that have shaped my identity are my parents, who always taught me right from wrong. Who were always there for me even though I may have disappointed them at one or more times in my life. Although, I had to quit college after only attending one semester because I got pregnant my parents were still there to guide me and support my decisions.
Family has a major impact on our lives. From the moment you were born, your family has taught you right from wrong. We get our religion, values, gender roles, language, and habits from our families. We get our status in society through your family’s connection and wealth, which later can determine one’s job opportunities in life. Although we grow up and start to develop our own values and beliefs and opinions, the family values, beliefs and opinions that were instilled in you since you were little never really go away.
There are a lot of different cultures in the world we live in today. Finding the place you belong and discovering your own culture can be a challenge. This is especially true when you look at culture as an individual versus culture in your family, or even within your community. I’ve always been very family oriented, so that plays a big part in who I am and how my family’s dynamic works. I believe that my family has had a huge impact on the development of my culture, and I hope that I have had the same impact on theirs.
My family is who I have socialized most with since they were the first ever people I interacted with. Family has had a large influence over who I am today because they are the people who I learned almost everything from (primary socialization). The reason I have such high morals and values is because of my family. By observing and taking from their behavior I was able to form my own values through nurture. Although they taught me a lot of beneficial things that make me a better person, I have also learned from some of my family members bad habits. My uncle always smoked around the kids, including myself, when I was younger and I never liked the smell and now I associate that memory with cigarettes and it makes me not have any desire to smoke whatsoever. I also had another uncle who went to jail a lot for selling drugs and other related things, and since I definitely did not want to end up in jail I now make smart decisions, and associate myself with people who benefit me.
