How has hip hop evolved over the years? There has been very many different changes in hip hop over the years. Hip hop has evolved but, the way it started is pretty interesting. There has been a many different artists throughout time. Along with the start of hip hop, and the several different artists, the reputationof hip hop has evolved over time. Hip hop all started with DJ’s, DJ’s would continuously play music at block parties or discos. They were able to play non-stop music by using a DJ mixer and two turntables. They would play tracks such as disco or funk, and would normally ask a friend to MC for them. Some MC’s would entertain the crowd by talking to the rhythm of the beat and occasionally using rhymes. This is how rapping originated.

The Sugarhill gang was one of the first hip hop artists. Their group consisted of four group members who were Wonder Mike (Mike Wright), Master Gee (Guy O’brien), Kory-O, and Big Bank Hank ( Henry Jackson). Their first song “Rapper’s Delight” sold over two million copies. The Notorious B.I.G. for example was a drug dealer and others were convicted criminals. As time wore on rapper’s didn’t need to be gangsters, convicted criminals, or drug dealers. Nowadays being and “gangster” is no longer a need to be successful in the hip hop industry. For example Drake is far from what you would call a “gangster” he was a child actor. Another thing that has evolved over time is lyrics. Before rapper’s would rap about how they are rising to reach the top, including the rapper’s who have already made it wrote about living in poor conditions such as crime, violence and hardship.
