In recent years communication overall has changed tremendously in many ways. We have went from communicating through written letters and through what is referred to now as snail mail, to instant messages that appear within seconds. The world of communication is ever-changing and many of us, whether in our personal lives or in our careers has had to adapt to these changes. Communication is essential in every part of our everyday lives. Over the years I can attest to the changing ways of how we can communicate.
In years I have noticed the changing in my work place, from when I started working eleven years ago. When I started in the working field eleven years ago, many of the orientations consisted of someone standing in the front presenting to the new hires. This did not immediately grab ones’ attention. As stated in the article communicating in a sound bite world, if the message is not delivered in a rapid and stimulating succession most of the audience will lose interest. In the three years that I have been with the company simple day to day communication has changed. The way we communicate changed in a way, that we are now even more technological dependent. When I started we would have meetings discussing topics in the office and we primarily communicated through interoffice email on our computers. Now many of the employees are walking around with their cell phones close by because many communications are now through text message. I believe this could be because many of us already looking at our phones, according to research from Deloitte, Americans look at their phones 46 times per day.
