Whether one realizes it or not, their socioeconomic status determines how the world views them. Socioeconomic status is the social standing or class that a person or family is placed into regarding their occupation choice, amount of education, annual income amount, and personal wealth. People with a higher socioeconomic status tend to be more influential on public decisions than those who classify in the lower socioeconomic groups. After analyzing the personal stories of Christie, Debra, and Caroline, I will be given better insight on socioeconomic status in order to reflect on my own personal socioeconomic status to see how it affects my life.

Within Canada a lot of people worry what other people think of them. One way someone can feel excluded through life is through economic exclusions. If someone is looked at to be rich they are looked at to have a better mental health status, but if they are poor than they will be more susceptible to mental health issues in their life. When people have more money it means that they will have an easier life where they have nothing to worry about. Being born into an economically disadvantaged family causes dilemmas before the kid is even born. According to Gulick, “Economically disadvantaged students have it tougher before they are born because they have less prenatal care if any at all” (1). Because the babies do not even have the care they need before they are born they end up being born with things that aren’t good. “Children born into poverty have lower birth weights, and many suffer from hunger and poor nutrition. When the youth suffer from poor nutrition and low birth rates it causes many complications for the hospital staff, the babies family, and causes stress on whoever pays the medical bill because the baby possible has to stay at the hospital longer. Once the kid is born the dilemmas go on and on. So how does being economically disadvantage affect people?
Social status can be seen in within the novel and in our own society nowadays. It is used as a way of separating those who are well off in life, upper class, versus those who work every day for a living, lower class. In addition social status tends to separate those who are educated versus those who are not. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Dickens shows the reader the importance of being both in the upper class and the lower class and how it can change a person's moral.
