Statement of Topic
This paper goes over the Union with Christ and how it affects salvation. The Bible proclaims that salvation is through Jesus Christ and that all that have a relationship with are him are saved. This union with Christ is either seen as encompassing all of salvation or as the center to which all components of salvations are connected. Scripture presents the components of salvations from four different perspectives: eternal, historical, present, and eschatological.

By Christ being God incarnate his death is enough and that salvation is not by works. Tertullian part of the western church began to teach that man can earn their salvation through merits. Another doctrine that came about in the era was sacra mentalism that is the belief that one receives grace by partaking of the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s supper. In the Medieval Church, Catholic theology solidified the view of saving merit and that one receives salvation by obediently receiving the sacraments of the church. Also then the church embrace the practice of praying to saint on behalf of the dead. Salvation was considered then to be a lifelong progress and those who died had not finished the process. Later, the church believed that one did not have the power o save oneself but with cooperation with God they would gain salvation. The Reformation came with Martin Luther and the doctrine of salvation by grace returning. Also, they went on to emphasize the biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone. In the Counter Reformation, there was the Synod of Dort. Dort affirmed total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace and the perseverance of the saints. In the Modern church there has been the arrival of an intellectual movement that is called the Enlightenment. This movement argues that in the pursuit of knowledge the induvial must start with oneself and that a person arrives at truth thought the use of reason alone. Also, this movement teaches truth requires complete freedom formal all strictures such church tradition or authority of the Bile. Mainly the Enlightenment denied the doctrine of salvation because they believe humanity does not need to be saved. In contrast to this is evangelicalism that reaffirms the doctrines of sin, salvation through Christ and the coming judgment of God. This doctrine does not ignore social
