How Does Pip Change Throughout The Novel

Throughout Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, the main character Pip goes through quite the journey and it ends up changing who is he. These experiences and rough patches end up proving how mentally tough Pip is. From Pip’s self-awareness progression over the book, and with the type of book Dickens wrote characters end up realizing by the end of the book who they really are. Also, class structure within the book shapes Pip and dictates what Pip goes through on his journey. When the Mid Victorian Period comes around, the middle class explodes as capitalism does as well and this has a big role in Pip’s experiences. But the character growth Pip grows through to achieve his goals end up making him rethink what he really wanted the whole time. Pip wanted to move up in social class, as all the characters were primarily concerned about were their social class arguably. The meaning behind the title says a lot behind the change in character Pip goes through, Great Expectations looks toward the future and what should it have in store. Pip was confident that so many things would go his way and by the time he realizes that not everything exactly can go his way his goals and aspirations aren’t the same. Also at the beginning of the book Pip more or less shows a bit of ignorance towards his family. The person he seemed to care about the most was the convict he helped out. As the story went on and on Pip learned his family was all he really had. The steps Pip took in to becoming the person he ultimately ended out to be was quite odd. Pip started so kind as a child like helping out Magwich for example, but then took a few steps back along the way. Learning Ms. Havisham ways caused Pip to these steps backwards in terms of developing. And in the fashion that Pip falls for Ms Havisham’s daughter Estella, it damages Pip emotionally in plenty of ways. After he’s done dirty by Ms. Havisham, Magwich helps him truly become a gentleman. In a way, good karma happened to Pip for helping Magwich in the beginning of the book. As he becomes a gentleman, he then finally develops in the right direction and becomes the character he should
