Have you ever watched The Goonies? Do you love adventure and suspense? The Goonies is a story about a group of kids who go out to find a pirate’s ancient treasure in order to save their home from foreclosure. To find this treasure is a dream of the main character Mikey to save the “Goon Docks” in Astoria, Oregon. This group of kids decide to avoid losing their homes and friendships to a greedy contractor. They start on a great adventure that brings their families and friendship closer and defeat the loss of their community and homes. Mikey can be seen as the dreamer and adventurer of the group. For years Mikey has heard the tales of One Eyed Willie and the lost treasure on One Eyed Willie’s ship. The story that Mikey heard was that One Eyed Willie was trapped in a cave by the English Armada in 1632. While trapped in this cave One Eyed Willie and his men spent several years digging caves and setting traps to protect their treasure. Mikey finds a map …show more content…
After getting down in the caves and figuring out the traps and facing danger at several turns, the gang reaches a pool of water. They hear Troy and his boys talking above them. Everyone is cold and ready to go home. Mikey does not want to give up. He knew that if Troy pulled them up that there was no chance to save their homes. As Andy was getting ready to ride up the bucket Mikey makes a speech that motivates the gang to continue with their adventure. “Don’t you realize? The next time you see sky, it’ll be over another town. The next time you take a test, it’ll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what’s right for them. Because it’s their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it’s our time. It’s our time down here. That’s all over the second we ride up Troy’s bucket.” This speech kept the adventure
But life is not a fairytale. Standing there lonely, having no job is our Sammy. This is when Sam realizes his path, the true way to become mature. The moment when “Lengel sighs and begins to look very patient:” Sammy, you don’t want to do this to your mom and dad” (Updike) hold him back a little bit, we can feel the regret in his heart. But he cannot go back anymore, decision has been made. He gives up his last chance; from now on, he’s on his own. Sammy finally understands that it is responsible behavior but not playing “adult-like” game that will make him a true
One of the most important elements in Richard Wright’s The Man Who Lived Underground is Wright’s careful use of sensory descriptions, imagery, and light to depict Fred Daniels’ experiences both above and below ground. Wright’s uses these depictions of Fred Daniels underground world to create incomplete pictures of the experiences he has and of the people he encounters. These half-images fuel the idea that The Man Who Lived Underground is a dark and twisted allusion to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.
Mikey and his fellow comrades, the Goonies, are together throughout the whole movie. Each particular member brings a certain aspect to the group. Literature states that boys tend to interact in more of a group setting (Fabes, Martin, & Hanish, 2003). One of Mikey’s noticeable qualities is a new found sense of independence. As adolescents begin to mature emotionally, they want to refrain from boyhood things, into a more mature state (McGoldrick, Carter, & Garcia Preto, 2011). This is characterized by Mikey’s need to explore and take on a new adventure to save his family home. Mikey and the Goonies find themselves in one part of the movie, at the local wishing well. At this time, Mikey gives a speech about choosing to take a risk and continue the adventure versus riding up a bucket into a reality that will be changing dramatically. Now since it is the movies of course; we know that at the end of the movie all will be right in the world. However, in a real life scenario, with armed and dangerous escapees following you, you might try to find a way out immediately, versus continue on an adventure for a dead pirate’s gold. Research shows evidence that increases in sensation seeking, risk-taking and reckless behavior in adolescence is influenced by puberty and not chronological age (Steinberg, 2005). Mikey is also using his newly founded cognitive skills of problem solving to work through
The Cat’s Table follows the archetypal journey of innocence to experience. Michael boards the ship expecting a three week adventure without parents “free from the realities of earth”. (7, 2, 14-15) In no way was he prepared for the changes he would undergo as the voyage progressed. Michael’s immigration from childhood to adulthood is mirrored with that of the Oransay’s route. In the beginning, Michael and his two friends, Cassius and Ramadhin, are in high spirits. Life on the open ocean holds no end of excitement and there are plenty of opportunities to discover and explore. Two objects of interest fascinate them: there is a prisoner on board as well as a knight; Sir Hector de Silva who lies dying. The boys make it their mission to discover everything they can about these two men who, while at opposite ends of the social ladder, eventually arrive at the same fate during the voyage.
In the end of the story, Andrew’s dad helps Andrew be able to go to school. His dad says to Andrew, “Andrew you have to start school this Summer.” Andrew answers, “How?” His dad responds back with, “I don’t know but you’re going.” This shows how Andrew’s dad really believes that Andrew will go to school next Fall. It also shows how Andrew’s never gives up on Andrew going to school. He helps him by never giving up and making him go to school.
