Persepolis Photo Essay Almost anything in the world can be viewed from two or more perspectives; a photograph, an idea, and even quotes. In Iran there is a number of things that can be misinterpreted or seen from multiple different perspectives. A lot of people may view Iran as a terrorist country or even an intelligent industrializing country. It is all based on perspective, which can be influenced by experiences, gender, race, and social class just to name a few. In Marjane Satrapi’s book Persepolis, she uses effective graphic images to present her perspective of religion, loss of innocence, and gender roles in Iran. The photo provided presents how the child, as the naive individual, has seemingly gone through an experience and gains knowledge, which will inturn alter the behavior and innocence of the child. Marjane Satrapi uses graphic images to present loss of innocence by gains of knowledge and experiences. For example, on page 25, Satrapi uses graphic images to show her reaction and facial expression to when she found out what the government did to her grandpa in prison. Marjane was absolutely horrified. Then, on pages 51 and 52, Satrapi uses even more graphic images of dead bodies and torture methods, but her reaction and thoughts seem to be more mature or less affected by the thoughts. Loss of innocence is presented through showing multiple graphic images as well as her reactions overtime.
