Persepolis is a controversial novel written by Marjane Satrapi. The novel is based on Marjane’s life and shows the struggle she went through while living in Iran. Persepolis is controversial because it has graphic scenes and is said to be unsuitable for children. Many places are banning it or debating on whether or not it should be allowed to read for those reasons. Along with controversy, there are many scenes in the novel that can be compared and contrasted. A main idea from the novel that can be easily compared and contrasted is Iran versus other countries. America is a good example. American government, religion, and lifestyle differs greatly from Iranian government, religion, and lifestyle. Americans also do not have to believe in any religion if that is what they choose. Religion is not forced in America, it is optional. The American lifestyle is based on the decisions Americans make with the freedom they are granted with. Therefore, each lifestyle in America is different since lifestyles are based on each individual’s choices. The typical American lifestyle is ideally easy-going.
Iranian government on the other hand is considered a Theocracy. Theocracy is a government in which priests rule in the name of God/a God. The people of Iran do not have much say in this particular system. Because Iran’s government is religion based, many things that distract people from religion are banned and the punishments for breaking rules usually involve torture. In Persepolis, Marjane and her family covered their windows with black curtains so their neighbors could not see if they had a party or played games. They did this because of what happened to Tinoosh’s dad. Police confiscated his house and Marjane explained the situation by saying, “They found records and video cassettes at their place. A deck of cards, a chess set. In other words, everything that’s banned” (Satrapi 105). This quote proves
