Humor is not traditionally thought of as a necessity in media; however, humor is an excellent vehicle for bringing to attention problems or changes that need to be made in society. In Alain de Botton’s 2004 book, Status Anxiety, he correctly argues that humorists, the messengers of news that might be too dangerous to say directly, play a vital role in society. Humor’s role in society has shown its importance in delivering messages to society through satirical writings, stand up comists and hosts of television programs. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World anticipates reproductive developments, sleep learning and drug use. Huxley predicted the world that we would live in if changes were not made to scientific developments and drug use. In his book, he uses satire and humor to deliver the message that scientific development can affect people in drastic ways. For example, in the society described in the book is driven by productivity and assembly lines. In the book people say, “Oh Ford” (as referring to Henry Ford, the inventor of the assembly line) instead of saying “Oh G-d.” Huxley uses this humor to deliver his message. Another example of satire is The Onion which uses satire to explain problems in society. For example, the stand up comic Brian Regan likes to make satirical jokes about everyday events in life. In one of his shows he talks about the long wait in an emergency room he had recently visited. He uses humor to discuss this information by saying that maybe if he moans louder while waiting he will get to see the doctor. Because most people have had experiences similar to Regan’s, his audience is able to relate to the problems he talks about and he is able to bring attention to these problems in life without his audience consciously knowing
